- If you are the holder of a Medicare Advantage Plan, it is illegal for an insurance company to sell you a senior Medicare Supplement Policy. If you plan on switching back to an Original Medicare plan, you may be able to purchase a Medigap policy.
- If you have health problems as you age, your standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed to be renewable. So long as you pay your monthly premium, your insurance provider cannot cancel your policy.
- Medigap policies only cover one person. If you have a spouse or family member that would like coverage, they must purchase a separate policy.
- You may only buy a Senior Medicare Supplement Plan from an insurance agent that is licensed to sell them in your state. ATLANTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - A historic medical milestone is colliding with the front lines of cancer care in Georgia.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a breakthrough daily pill that chokes off tumor growth, offering a powerful new lifeline to families facing advanced pancreatic cancer.
Atlanta News First was the only local news team allowed inside the treatment room at City of Hope Atlanta in Newnan on Thursday as a patient was given her first dose to take home.
Karen Siciliano, a 61-year-old athletic director’s assistant, has been fighting stage 4 pancreatic cancer for four years. Her diagnosis came unexpectedly following a routine CT scan she requested during a general checkup just before her son’s wedding.
To receive treatment, Siciliano and her husband commute from New York to Georgia every two weeks. She has undergone more than 80 rounds of chemotherapy, maintaining her strength through personalized, aggressive care and integrated naturopathic support to keep her blood counts strong. Through it all, she has not missed a single day of work.
On Thursday, her grueling routine changed.
Siciliano is among the first patients in the country to receive Rasonque (daraxonrasib), a newly approved daily tablet. She packed the bottle carefully into her bag to take her first dose at home to avoid any unexpected side effects on her flight back to New York.
“I hold my future in my hand right here,” Siciliano said. “That bottle symbolizes a break from my body to heal from the chemo. It gives me an opportunity to be around my family a little bit more. It just gives us just a little bit of a calm.”
The drug acts as a “molecular glue” that locks onto a helper protein to choke off the cancer’s growth signals. In clinical trials, the daily pill did what was once thought impossible — nearly doubling overall survival times for the sickest patients.
The milestone is a massive victory for Georgia medical research.
City of Hope Atlanta was a key site for the pivotal clinical trials that led to the drug’s rapid FDA approval.
Brian Wortz, the director of clinical research at City of Hope Atlanta, spent years pushing the drug through its trial phases to get it to this exact bedside.
“Ultimately, that’s what we’re looking for. To figure out what’s next and how we can give our patients more hope, and more time with their families,” Wortz said.
For oncologists, having the drug on the shelves provides a rare, powerful new weapon in a field historically starved of effective treatments.
“Many times when you have a patient with pancreatic cancer, you feel like you’re letting them down because the therapies aren’t very good,” said Dr. Kristin Higgins, Chief Clinical Officer at City of Hope Atlanta. “So much when we talk about hope, it’s not tangible. But today, it is tangible.”
Over the last four years, the clinic staff has become like family to Siciliano and her husband Charlie. Because the daily pill allows for longer stretches between clinic visits, leaving her care team behind is a bittersweet transition.
As Siciliano walked out of the clinic on Thursday, nurses and staff gathered in the hallway to surprise her, cheering and crying as she prepared to head home.
“Now, you won’t see me every 28 days,” Siciliano said.
With the burden of bi-weekly chemotherapy infusions lifted, Siciliano can now focus on celebrating her granddaughter’s third birthday and welcoming a new grandchild due in March.
“I have cancer. I am not cancer. And that’s what it is,” and Siciliano.
Rasonque was fast-tracked by the FDA months ahead of schedule because the clinical trial results were undeniable. Because the drug targets the RAS pathway — a protein mutation active in 90% of pancreatic cancers but also found in roughly 30% of other solid tumors — clinical trials are already expanding to see if this same “molecular glue” can be used to treat colorectal, ovarian, and lung cancers next.

ATLANTA, GA — Business partners Eshaan Attawala and Shehzaan Chunara will soon take a crack at opening a new breakfast eatery along the Atlanta Beltline.
The Chunara Group's newest concept, Eggslut, will open in the fall at 661 Auburn Ave., Ste. 210 - along the Beltline's Eastside trail in the Krog Street Market.
"We're not opening a location, we're joining a neighborhood," Attawala told Patch recently.
Chef Alvin Cailan founded Eggslut in 2011 alongside cousin Jeff Vales, according to multiple reports.
The egg-forward, open-kitchen restaurant began as a food truck in Los Angeles and has now transformed into an international brick-and-mortar business.
"More than anything, ... (I'm) happy to bring Eggslut to Atlanta," Attawala said. "Happy to just keep Eggslut rolling on the East Coast."
All of the chef-driven, gourmet dishes crafted at Eggslut will be fresh and made to order.
A brioche sandwich that features melty cheddar cheese and soft scrambled eggs is Attawala's favorite item on Eggslut's menu. That's the Fairfax.
The sandwich also comes with chives, caramelized onions and sriracha mayo, according to the company website.
"It takes us a really long time to make; hence, that's why it's my favorite sandwich," Attawala said.
His most-adored side item comes in a glass jar. The Slut is a cage-free coddled egg that rests atop a potato purée and is poached in a glass jar.
Gray salt and chives top the egg, which is complemented by baguette slices.
"It's honestly one of the more delicious items on our menu," Attawala said.
Traditional sandwiches are also available at Eggslut. These include the bacon, egg and cheese or the sausage, egg and cheese.
Cheeseburgers, egg salad, french toast sticks, buttermilk biscuits, cold brew, truffle hash browns and salted chocolate chip cookies also fill out Eggslut's menu.
In a sea of cuisine along the Beltline, Eggslut aims to create a homey atmosphere among egg lovers in the Atlanta community.
The aesthetics will be worth a quick snapshot for Instagram, where the West Coast-based restaurant first became popular, Attawala said.
"The Beltline is essentially Atlanta’s front porch, and we want to be on it, not near it," he said. "We are chef-driven, not fast food."
With walking and running trails surrounding the Beltline, the foot traffic also attracted Attawala and Chunara to the area.
Though Eggslut will be a first for freshman franchisee Attawala, Chunara has overseen the opening of a bountiful of new eateries.

The Beltline location will be Atlanta's second Eggslut, though Attawala said the first is solely operated by the Moxy Atlanta Downtown. He considers the Beltline site to be the flagship for upcoming East Coast locations.
"This is kind of us doubling down on a city that we believe in," Attawala said.
The South Florida native says Atlanta is filled with great culture and food, and he hopes Eggslut will soon be a staple in a city he deems booming. He added there is growth potential for the Atlanta restaurant scene.
"The biggest thing I like about Atlanta, good food, good people, good culture, good energy, good vibes," Attawala said. "All that I look for in a city, all that I look for in a restaurant and all that will be in Eggslut, as well."
"Eggslut is a name for people who are in love with eggs," Attawala said, and he was one of those people.
In fact, he consumes six eggs daily. On a weekday, Attawala eats them half-boiled; and on the weekends, he prefers his eggs soft scrambled.
So, when the opportunity came, Attawala said he found the idea to be great.
"The icing on the cake is that I absolutely love eggs," he said "... I actually truly love eggs."
Attawala believes Chunara also tapped him to partner with on Eggslut because of his work ethic and operations ability.
The restaurant will open at the Beltline with a "very unique point of view," Attawala said.
"The way we do things, it's built to be wanted and remembered and shown to people," he said.
He has not yet revealed an opening date for the new Eggslut, but he plans to eventually expand along the East Coast.
"This is just the beginning of a lot more," Attawala said.

The Labor Day weekend could be stormy for some areas, but the National Weather Service on Thursday told Patch the "big story will be the heat."
Patch spoke with Vaughn Smith, a meteorologist for the NWS' Peachtree City office.
He said afternoon scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast for Saturday-Monday in metro Atlanta and surrounding areas.
As of Thursday, there was a 30-40 percent chance of rain for the weekend, Smith said. Strong and severe storms are not anticipated.
The downpour will not be widespread, meaning some areas may not see rain, Smith said.
However, smoldering heat indices could climb up to 105 degrees Saturday and Sunday.
A heat advisory is currently in place until 8 p.m. Thursday for Rome, Dalton and other portions of northwest Georgia.
The sweltering heat comes before Monday, when Labor Day will be observed. Actual temperatures are expected to be in the mid-90s.
"It's going to be very warm those days, but Monday we'll get a little bit of a cooling," Smith said.
Temperatures could slightly dive into the upper 80s by Monday, he added.
"It definitely will be a welcomed cooling period from these scorching temperatures we've been having," Smith said.
Some summer holiday weekends in Georgia create the opportunity for outdoor grilling. Smith advised anyone outside to wear cool and loose clothing, stay hydrated with water and find shade.

An injunction hearing on the matter is reportedly scheduled for Thursday in Baton Rouge.
Tailgates, grills and banners were set up on Georgia Tech’s campus as early as 10 a.m., hours before the 8 p.m. kickoff.
Fans on campus said the game was the main focus regardless of any legal woes. Freshman Karthik Alapati said he was attending his first Georgia Tech game.
“I’ve never been to a Georgia Tech game so I know it’s going to be crazy. Students are walking around, seeing all these fraternities hanging up their banners - I know it’s going to be exciting,” Alapati said.
Freshman Regan Saffel said she and others plan to spend the day on campus before the game.
“We’re just going hang out all day and hopefully watch the Yellow Jackets win,” Saffel said.
Saffel said she is looking forward to being part of the student section.
“I’m so excited. We didn’t have a lot of school spirit in high. So, I’m really excited to be surrounded in the student section, yeah,” Saffel said.
Running back Justice Haynes said the team is ready for the season opener.
“We’ve got four other dudes out there ready to go. Make place, and do things, and great things as well, you know,” Haynes said.
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders played professionally in Atlanta for both the Falcons and the Braves.
Georgia Tech plays Colorado at 8 p.m. in the season opener for both teams.
