One would think that health insurance gets easier as you approach retirement age, but the truth is that picking an initial Medicare coverage plan can be daunting.

Unfortunately, the confusing process of signing up for Medicare causes many seniors to forego healthcare coverage altogether. After all, Medicare enrollment can involve several federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration (or SSA) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (or CMS).

That way, they can enjoy retirement with peace of mind knowing they are protected and ready for life after 65. What is Medicare?

If you're approaching the golden years of your life, it's important you understand what Medicare is if you don't already.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program reserved for people older than 65 who have worked full-time for at least ten years. The Medicare program is paid for by a combination of worker payroll tax, premiums paid by Medicare enrollees, and the U.S. government.

There are four parts of Medicare:

Senior Medicare Plans Brownsville, TX
A

This type of Medicare is free for most U.S. citizens. Medicare Part A helps older adults pay for care in a nursing facility, hospital visits, and some forms of in-home senior care.

B

This tier costs around $100 per month. It covers different outpatient services like lab tests, preventative care, doctor's visits, mental health care, clinical trials, and some forms of surgery.

C

This type of Medicare is most often called Medicare Advantage. This tier of Medicare allows seniors to choose health plans provided by insurance companies like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. Individuals who use Medicare Advantage commonly use Medicare supplement plan insurance to help pay for health care costs that Original Medicare won't cover, like coinsurance, deductibles, and copayments.

D

Sometimes called "PDPs," these plans add drug coverage to standard Medicare, some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS), some Medicare Cost Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans (MSA).

The amount of money you pay for your health care depends on several factors, including:

At Senior Medicare Insurance Services, we offer a number of health insurance solutions for seniors. Two of our most used services include Medicare Advantage plan insurance and Medicare supplement plan insurance.

Senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Brownsville, TX

Sometimes called Medigap, the purpose of Medicare Supplement Insurance is to help fill in "gaps" that might not be covered by Original Medicare. You can think of a Medigap policy as a supplement for your Original Medicare benefits.

Private companies like Senior Medicare Insurance Services sell this type of insurance right here in South Carolina. While Original Medicare will pay for much of the cost associated with health care services you need, it may not cover all of your expenses. Generally, Medigap policies do not cover costs stemming from eyeglasses, private-duty nurses, dental care, hearing aids, or long-term care.

Depending on the Medicare Supplement Plan that you choose, it may cover out-of-the-country medical services when you travel abroad. Assuming you have Original Medicare coverage, your policy will cover its share of Medicare-approved health care costs. Once your Original Medicare coverage reaches its limit, your Medigap policy will pay its share of the fees.

Our Medigap policies are drafted to meet your specific needs, and can help cover remaining health care costs such as:

Deductibles

Copayments

Coinsurance

Important Information About Senior Supplement Plan Insurance

To dispel some confusion, you should know that a Medigap policy is not the same as a Medicare Advantage Plan. The latter helps you receive Medicare benefits, while the former supplements the benefits you obtain through your Original Medicare plan. As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:

Medicare Plans Brownsville, TX

As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:

  • To qualify for a Medigap policy, you must first have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
  • Payments on your Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan will be made to the private insurance company that you choose, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. These payments are made every month and are paid in addition to the monthly payment you make for Medicare Part B.
  • If you are the holder of a Medicare Advantage Plan, it is illegal for an insurance company to sell you a senior Medicare Supplement Policy. If you plan on switching back to an Original Medicare plan, you may be able to purchase a Medigap policy.
  • If you have health problems as you age, your standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed to be renewable. So long as you pay your monthly premium, your insurance provider cannot cancel your policy.
  • Medigap policies only cover one person. If you have a spouse or family member that would like coverage, they must purchase a separate policy.
  • You may only buy a Senior Medicare Supplement Plan from an insurance agent that is licensed to sell them in your state. Senior Medicare Insurance Services has been licensed to sell Medigap policies in South Carolina for years. We have helped countless seniors get the Medicare coverage they need and continue to do so to this day.
  • In the past, Medigap policies were able to cover costs related to prescription drugs. As of January 1st, 2006, prescription drug coverage is not available on Medicare Supplement Plans. The best way to get coverage for your prescription drugs is to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, often called Part D. Contact our office today to learn more about paying premiums on Medigap and Medicare plans.

For many people, the best time to buy senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Brownsville, TX is during the 7 months Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This period starts the day you turn 65 years old, so long as you hold Medical Insurance (Medicare Part B). Generally, during the enrollment period, you get more policy choices and better pricing. Once the enrollment period is over, you may not be able to purchase a Medigap policy. Contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services today to determine if you qualify for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan.

A Medicare Advantage Plan is a kind of Medicare health coverage designed to provide seniors with all their Part A and Part B Medicare benefits. Many Medicare Advantage Plans will often include coverage of the following:

Senior Health Insurance Brownsville, TX

In addition, most Medicare Advantage Plans give seniors coverage for their prescription drug needs. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan through Senior Medicare Insurance Services, your Medicare benefits are covered through your plan and will not be paid for by traditional Medicare.

How Medicare Advantage Plans Work

Sometimes called "MA Plans" or "Part C," Medicare Advantage Plans are considered an "all in one" solution to Original Medicare. Senior Medicare Advantage Plans are only offered by private companies that are approved, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. Seniors who enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan are still on Medicare. However, these individuals enjoy bundled plans that give seniors the benefits of hospital insurance (Medicare Part A), medical insurance (Medicare Part B), and sometimes drug coverage (Part D).

Medicare Advantage Plans are very popular because they cover all Medicare services and make life a little easier for seniors who have trouble understanding the nuances of Medicare.

When you contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services to choose your Medicare Advantage Plan, ask your agent about Medicare prescription drug coverage. Unless you already have drug coverage (Part D), you should seriously consider Part D coverage to help reduce costs associated with prescription drugs. You may also want to consider a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan to help fill gaps in coverage that Original Medicare will not cover.

Brownsville (Cameron County) — Saronic has broken ground on Port Alpha, a next-generation American shipyard built to restore the nation’s maritime industrial capacity.

Situated on 835 acres at the Port of Brownsville with the option to expand to nearly 4,400 acres, Port Alpha represents a private capital investment of more than $3 billion, and VBX has monitored the project since the company announced it was evaluating the site in March.

The shipyard, which will be capable of building both autonomous and manned ships, is expected to generate up to 10,000 direct jobs and create an estimated $264.5 billion in economic impact for the State of Texas, making it one of the largest economic development projects in modern Texas history.

Restoring American shipbuilding is a national priority. Port Alpha is coming online to provide the capacity, capability, and speed the moment demands, echoing the Administration’s Executive Order “Restoring America’s Maritime Dominance,” the Maritime Action Plan, and the U.S. Navy’s shipbuilding plans to support a hybrid fleet, each calling for the same thing: a stronger, U.S.-built commercial and defense fleet ready to take on the challenges of today and tomorrow, according to a news release.

“American shipbuilding needs to be rebuilt for what comes next,” said Dino Mavrookas, co-founder and CEO of Saronic, speaking at the ceremony. “Port Alpha is where that starts (and) is designed from the ground up to produce both autonomous and manned vessels at scale, with modularity and throughput shaping the shipyard’s architecture. This is one of the defining engineering challenges of our time, and we are building the team, partnerships, and capital base to meet it.”

An Innovative Approach to Building ShipsThe innovation at Port Alpha is the shipyard itself. Saronic is building a clean-sheet, software-defined facility designed from the ground up to deliver autonomous, autonomy-capable, and manned ships at speed and scale. At opening, Port Alpha will introduce an initial 150,000 gross tons of annual shipbuilding capacity — more than doubling current U.S. commercial shipbuilding capacity — with the potential to scale to over 2 million gross tons. Port Alpha will initially be capable of producing vessels up to 850 feet, while future site expansion could support production of vessels over 1,200 feet, ultimately making it the largest shipyard in America.

That capacity expands what the nation can build for defense and commercial customers alike, with the goal of supplementing existing U.S. shipbuilders and supporting U.S. allies and partners who face the same backlog and capacity squeeze.

Building for the Future Starts TodaySaronic is taking a phased approach to building Port Alpha, beginning operations with initial production capacity that lets the company employ its manufacturing approach and establish workforce pipelines. At initial operations, Port Alpha will encompass 1.2 million square feet of enclosed production space within a 2.5-million-square-foot production activity area, spread across 8 to 10 dedicated production buildings and served by more than 2,500 feet of deepwater quay. Two to four build positions will handle final ship erection, supported by 75,000 tonnes — 150 million pounds — of annual steel processing capacity. Saronic has selected JE Dunn | Alberici Joint Venture to construct this initial phase, bringing decades of experience on large commercial projects and industrial builds.

This first phase will focus on building autonomous, autonomy-capable, and manned ships, including Landing Craft Utility (LCU) vessels for the U.S. Navy. Saronic was recently awarded a contract to build these core Navy logistics vessels, meeting an immediate and urgent fleet need while continuing to ramp up to meet the needs of an autonomous maritime future.

According to a press release, this phase begins to close the capacity gap immediately, allowing Saronic to build its workforce and supply chain and validate its manufacturing approach.

Saronic has broken ground on Port Alpha, a new U.S. shipyard at the Port of Brownsville, Texas, representing a private capital investment of more than $3 billion and a potentially significant addition to U.S. shipbuilding capacity.

Situated on 835 acres with an option to expand to nearly 4,400 acres, Port Alpha is being designed to build autonomous, autonomy-capable and manned vessels. Saronic said the project could eventually support up to 10,000 direct jobs.

At opening, the yard is planned to provide 150,000 gross tons of annual shipbuilding capacity, which Saronic said would more than double current U.S. commercial shipbuilding capacity. Long-term plans envision capacity exceeding 2 million gross tons annually.

“American shipbuilding needs to be rebuilt for what comes next,” said Dino Mavrookas, Saronic co-founder and CEO. “Port Alpha is where that starts.”

The initial development will include 1.2 million sq. ft. of enclosed production space within a 2.5-million-sq.-ft. production area, spread across eight to 10 production buildings. More than 2,500 ft. of deepwater quay will support the facility.

Two to four build positions are planned for final ship erection, backed by annual steel processing capacity of 75,000 tonnes. JE Dunn | Alberici Joint Venture has been selected to construct the initial phase.

Port Alpha will initially be capable of producing ships up to 850 ft. long. Saronic said future expansion could accommodate vessels exceeding 1,200 ft.

Initial production will include Landing Craft Utility (LCU) vessels for the U.S. Navy under a recently awarded Saronic contract, alongside autonomous and autonomy-capable vessels.

“Port Alpha is designed from the ground up to produce both autonomous and manned vessels at scale, with modularity and throughput shaping the shipyard’s architecture,” Mavrookas said. “This is one of the defining engineering challenges of our time.”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said the project would “create 10,000 jobs and put hundreds of millions of dollars in annual paychecks into the hands of Texans.”

Saronic said the project will be developed in phases as it builds its workforce, supply chain and manufacturing processes.

“This is bigger than one shipyard,” Mavrookas said. “What stands on this ground in five years — the supplier base, the workforce, the ships themselves — is what will determine whether America leads at sea for the next century.”

Brownsville, TX (KRGV) — A Brownsville restaurant is closing its doors for good after 22 years.

Kiki's Restaurant is shutting down this weekend. The family behind the restaurant says closing was never part of the plan.

In a statement to Channel 5 News, the family said it has been dealing with a difficult tax situation following audits by the Texas Comptroller for the past several months.

The family said it made large monthly payments while also trying to cover payroll and other expenses. Eventually, the family said it fell behind on rent.

The family also wants customers to know the closure did not happen because people stopped coming in.

For longtime customers like Kevin Castaneda, the news came as a surprise. His memories of Kiki's go back to when he was about 8 years old. He is 35 now.

"Just family because you'll be sharing it with the family; you love a lot your uncles, and aunts," Castaneda said.

He said the restaurant had a way of turning ordinary days into something special.

When he heard about the closure, he was caught off guard.

"I am very shocked. I thought it'd be a staple of Brownsville for the foreseeable future," Castaneda said. "I thought they'd be here 'till my kids have kids."

Pedro Arroyo and his mom, Hilda, also made a point to visit on the restaurant's final day. For their family, Kiki had been part of birthdays and Christmas gatherings for years.

"My dad always brought us here to eat. He brought us here for a long time, so it does make me sad that it's closing," Hilda said.

Castaneda said he plans to make it back for one last meal.

"For sure I am going to make it one last time. As a matter of fact, my wife was saying that she wanted a parillada today, so perfect timing," Castaneda said.
