- Medigap policies only cover one person. If you have a spouse or family member that would like coverage, they must purchase a separate policy.
- You may only buy a Senior Medicare Supplement Plan from an insurance agent that is licensed to sell them in your state. The Food Mill Cafe has served as the public-facing arm of The Food Mill for the past six years.
“The Food Mill was founded on the belief that food has the power to transform health,” Olivia Amos, executive director of the Food Mill, said in a news release.
Amos said the organization plans to put more resources toward programs including its Mobile Farmers Market, Produce Prescription initiatives, Cooking Matters classes, Healthy Choices for Everyone curriculum and emergency food assistance.
The Food Mill said about 30% of participants in its Produce Prescription program have seen their blood pressure improve..
Uptown Life Group, led by Tom Jones and Buddy Nelms, has already worked with The Food Mill on workforce development efforts, including culinary training opportunities for Truth Spring Trade School students.
Under the new ownership, Uptown Life Group plans to continue those training opportunities and expand workforce development programs for students in Jordan High Vocational High School’s Career and Technical Instruction program.
The company also plans to continue providing breakfasts for students at Truth Spring Academy and create additional career and professional development opportunities for Food Mill Cafe employees across Uptown Life Group’s seven restaurant concepts.
“The Food Mill has built something truly special over the past six years,” Jones said in the news release. “Olivia and her team created much more than a cafe — they created a place with purpose.”
Uptown Life Group plans to introduce the Sugar Peddler’s Bistro & Bakery at the cafe location, 3718 Second Ave. The news release did not include details about the concept or when the transition will be completed.
“This transition allows each organization to focus on what it does best,” Amos said.

Columbus’ beloved Allen Levi and his bestselling book, “Theo of Golden,” might be headed to the big screen.
Warner Bros. Pictures is negotiating for the feature film rights to the novel set in a fictional town modeled on Columbus, , with Tom Hanks eyed to produce and potentially star.
The news marks a major Hollywood turn for the self-published novel that’s become the top-selling print book in America this year.
What we know about the deal
Although nothing is finalized, Hanks has been suggested to play the titular character, Theo, with Gil Netter and Gary Goetzman producing. Levi is tapped as a possible executive producer, Deadline reported.
Netter is also known for producing a few other notable book-to-film adaptations, including “Marley & Me,” “The Blind Side,” “Life of Pi,” “Just Mercy,” “The Shack” and “Water for Elephants.”
Rights negotiations are still underway, according to Deadline, and there’s been no official greenlight. The cast, beyond Hanks’ interest, a timeline or shooting location have yet to be confirmed.
Joel Slocumb from the Columbus Film Commission told the Ledger-Enquirer he has no definite information to share about whether the movie will be filmed in Columbus. However, they are “trying to get that information as we speak.”

The novel, self-published in 2023, sold over 3 million copies after Simon & Schuster published it in 2025. It was tapped as one of Oprah’s favorite’s last month and has been a New York Times bestseller for more than nine consecutive month and is currently No. 1 in the combined print and e-book category.
The book has also been a global success, in 43 languages, with bestseller status in places like the Netherlands, Italy and the U.K.

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Four Columbus men have been sentenced to federal prison for their roles in a pandemic-tax-related fraud scheme.
The sentences include prison time, supervised release, and restitution amounts that will go to the United States Treasury.
Upshaw pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud on Feb. 4. The other defendants pleaded guilty to the same charge on Jan. 21.
Each received their sentence on Aug. 5. This comes as a result of a $17 million pandemic fraud plot.
Investigation launched into pandemic tax fraud
According to court documents and evidence presented at the sentencing, officials say that law enforcement was first alerted to the scheme when unusually large IRS deposits landed in the bank account of 32-year-old Tommie Mullins of Columbus. Investigators made the discovery in a joint law enforcement effort, “Operation Sweet Silence.”
As a result, court-ordered wiretaps caught Mullins discussing a 20% cut from a fraudulent Employee Retention Credit scheme. According to officials, the Employee Retention Credit was a tax credit created for businesses during COVID-19.
Following this information being caught on wiretaps, law enforcement and IRS agents began an investigation into the pandemic tax fraud.
Upshaw uses fraudulent business to claim COVID-related tax credit
According to officials, Upshaw registered DOPE! Apparael, LLC with the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office on June 26, 2022. He filed five falsified tax returns the following year to claim COVID-related tax credits.
Upshaw received $411,112.21 in total from those returns. However, law enforcement soon discovered he did not have any W-2s or filed any tax returns from 2019-2023 for the company.
In addition, Georgia Department of Labor records showed no records for the company or of any employed staff or paid wages. Officials say Upshaw used the money to purchase luxury vehicles.
Swift, Williams, and Sparks falsify tax returns
Swift, Williams, and Sparks also file falsified tax returns using LLCs registered under their names. Officials say they claiming they were entitled to COVID tax credits.
Swift received $417,095.56; Williams received $156,531.74; and Sparks received $311,072.55. The total attempted loss was $2,250,423.67.
The defendants also attempted to get others to participate in their scheme. They would electronically file returns on behalf of others for a percentage of the refund.
In addition, they assisted people with established a LLC and obtained an EIN.

The South Commons Redevelopment Citizens Advisory Committee reviewed two early concept plans Wednesday for the future of the 90-acre civic and sports district between Victory Drive and the Chattahoochee River in Columbus.
The concepts, presented during a virtual meeting, are preliminary. No city action or formal decisions were made, and no cost estimates were given during the meeting. Officials said the plans are expected to change substantially as the redevelopment process continues.
The Development Authority of Columbus tapped architecture firm Nelson Worldwide, whose work includes The Battery Atlanta, to develop the concepts. Nelson leaders Jeremy Hull, Nathan Scheidt and Lamar Wakefield presented the plans to city officials, development leaders and members of the advisory committee.
“We’re going to do something really cool here,” Wakefield said. “I think we can have something really special for the city.”
A master developer has not been selected for the project. Wakefield cautioned that the eventual plan could look very different from the concepts shown Wednesday.
“A master developer is going to be required here for sure,” Wakefield said. “I will tell you guys that not only will the master plan change, but it will also change 50 times.”
What’s the difference between the two concepts?
Both concepts include housing, hotels, shops and a public gathering space. But they organize the district around different focal points.
Concept A centers activity around Synovus Park, home of the Columbus Clingstones, the Atlanta Braves Class AA minor league baseball affiliate.
A fan plaza beside the stadium would connect pregame and postgame activity with a retail street and restaurants. A linear park would extend from the South Commons Softball Complex through the Columbus Civic Center area toward the stadium.
“Option A is really looking at the fan plaza area being more anchored by the baseball stadium and then connecting back to the civic center,” Hull said.
Concept B places the heart of the district closer to the civic center. Its main plaza would shift toward the center of the site, creating what Hull described as a more “ceremonial” entrance from Fourth Street.
Along the river, Concept B also creates a more continuous greenway, with amenities such as a skate park and an amphitheater spread farther apart.
Early discussion among meeting participants leaned toward Concept A, though planners are now working on a hybrid that incorporates elements of both concepts.
“[South Commons] is one of the best sites I’ve seen in a long time,” Wakefield said. “The civic center, the ballfield, the softball stuff, the ice rink, the fact that it’s on the river . . . I just think it’s an incredible site.”
What’s next?
During the next few months, consultants will blend the two concept maps into a single, more detailed plan and complete traffic and economic studies. Then they will prepare a formal presentation that lays out the pros and cons of selling or leasing South Commons land before the city seeks a master developer.
No specific date was set for the next public meeting as of publication.
“The questions and comments are what drive this,” said Missy Kendrick, CEO of the Development Authority of Columbus and its marketing arm, Choose Columbus. “I’m OK with it taking the time that it takes to get it done.”
