CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - A Conway church says that after a Netflix documentary on a Grand Strand case that’s made national headlines, people are confusing its church with another.
Mercy Baptist Church, located at 2805 4th Avenue, posted on Facebook Aug. 27 that John-Paul Miller is not affiliated with the church.
“Mercy Church of Conway is an entirely separate and independent congregation,” the church stated in the post. “We are an independent congregation with no affiliation with JP Miller in any way, shape, or form.”
John-Paul Miller now leads Mercy Church in Myrtle Beach, according to multiple news reports and public records, which has contributed to the confusion with Mercy Baptist Church.
Mercy Baptist Church released the statement after the release of Netflix’s Death of the Pastor’s Wife documentary series, which followed the Mica Miller case.
Throughout the three episodes, Mica’s family members and friends allege her estranged husband and former Solid Rock Church pastor John-Paul Miller stalked and abused her before her death.
Mica Miller’s body was found at Lumber River State Park in Robeson County, North Carolina, on April 27, 2024. Authorities ruled her death a suicide.
The case drew national attention amid questions surrounding her estranged husband, John Paul Miller.
John Paul Miller, 46, of Myrtle Beach, faces federal charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators. He pleaded not guilty in January 2026.
A federal grand jury in Columbia indicted John Paul Miller in December 2025.
The indictment alleges that beginning in November 2022, he sent unwanted and harassing communications to Mica Miller until her death.
Alleged behavior outlined in the indictment includes:
Authorities say John Paul Miller told investigators he hired a private investigator to prevent Mica Miller from purchasing firearms. Prosecutors allege he actually hired the investigator to cyberstalk her.
John Paul Miller faces up to five years in prison for cyberstalking and up to two years for making false statements.
The case has been delayed six times after motions filed by his attorneys, but online records say a pretrial hearing is scheduled for Oct. 6.
John Paul Miller has not been charged in connection with Mica Miller’s death.

Church leaders in Conway say they believe the backlash is coming from people who recently watched the Netflix documentary “Death of a Pastor’s Wife,” which focuses on JP Miller’s relationship with Mica Miller. They say they have received phone calls, emails, and hateful comments on social media, leading them to send messages to the community emphasizing they are not affiliated with Miller or his church.
“We just want everybody to know that Mercy Baptist Church in Conway, South Carolina, has no affiliation with any of that,” said Kenny Lee, a council member at Mercy Baptist Church. “We’re not in the Netflix stuff with the Mercy Ministries or any of that. We’re strictly Mercy Baptist Church in Conway. Everybody is welcome here. But we don’t want the derogatory negativity. I mean, we have a hard enough time, you know, dealing with stuff without somebody else’s drama to it.”
Mercy Baptist Church said the attacks are especially concerning because it runs a child ministry and daycare.
Church leaders also said people have sent hateful messages to businesses that have supported the Conway church in the past.

With around 30,000 residents, Conway is competing against participants in states across the country.
City spokeswoman June Wood said Conway being nominated is significant for both the city and its residents, emphasizing how they have embraced the city’s rebranding in the past decade as a Southern holiday tourism destination.
"What makes Christmas in Conway so special is the way our community embraces it," Wood said. "Our residents have turned the holiday season into something that feels uniquely Conway, filled with traditions, togetherness and a genuine sense of Christmas spirit."
She encouraged everyone to vote for Conway this week.
"Being named one of Hallmark’s Top 25 Merriest Towns is a wonderful recognition of the people who make this community so special," Wood said. "With voting still open, we hope everyone will continue showing the country just how merry Conway can be."

Conway’s holiday history
While Conway has always decorated for Christmas, the municipality launched a holiday rebrand in 2022, beginning with Halloween in the hopes of generating some seasonal buzz. The city invested more time and money into its preparations.
Now Conway goes all out for every major holiday, including Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter and the Fourth of July.
Each year, the city budgets some of its hospitality fee collections for decorations. That amount increased from $116,391 in the 2023 fiscal year to $229,712.89 in the 2024 fiscal year, according to city records. City officials said that total includes all holidays.
The gamble has paid off. In 2017, five years before the city started its Halloween blitz, downtown saw 135,000 visitors in October, according to the city's data. In 2024, that total jumped to 235,000.
Also, earlier this year, the General Assembly adopted a resolution dedicating the city of Conway as the "Holiday Capital of South Carolina," securing the rebrand as one for the history books.

CONWAY, S.C. (WPDE) — Drivers in the Conway area should expect Highway 501 construction to continue far longer than originally planned, with the widening project now projected to run into the spring of 2027.
The Highway 501 widening project between Highway 544 and Myrtle Ridge Drive is expanding the roadway from four lanes to six. Construction started in Sept. 2024 under a contract that called for the work to be finished by Nov. 30, 2026. The South Carolina Department of Transportation now says that the completion date will not be met and the project is expected to stretch into the spring of 2027.
SCDOT spokesperson Tyler Fedor said crews are still installing drainage in the median. The agency also said summer restrictions limited when crews could close lanes and work in some areas. Those restrictions lift after Labor Day, allowing nighttime lane closures to resume.

Additional work remains ahead. SCDOT said new traffic signals are expected to begin going in February, and the final layer of asphalt is expected in the spring.
The widening is a joint SCDOT and Horry County RIDE III project. Horry County’s RIDE III program was approved by voters in 2016 and included the U.S. 501 corridor among the projects funded through its one-cent capital-project sales tax. The goal is to reduce congestion and delays while improving safety at intersections along the busy 501 corridor.
Questions remain about the financial impact of the delay, including what the contract price was when the project started, what the authorized price is today, and whether the contractor faces any financial consequences for missing the Nov. 30, 2026, deadline or whether taxpayers could absorb additional costs. SCDOT has been asked to provide those answers and the supporting contract.
In the meantime, drivers can expect more nighttime construction now that summer restrictions are lifted after this weekend.

First United Methodist Church Pumpkin Patch
Looking for that perfect pumpkin for painting or carving? If you're planning to make a jack-o-lantern, stop by the courtyard at First UMC for a variety of pumpkins and gourds. Starting Sunday, September 27, they are open daily Monday - Friday at 11-7 p.m., Saturdays 10 -6:30 and Sundays 11:45- 7 p.m. Proceeds from purchases go to fund First UMC's children and youth ministry programs.
The Big BOO-ginning - City of Halloween Kick-Off Celebration
Join the "City of Halloween" to commence spooky season on Thursday, October 1 at 7 p.m. for a parade, food trucks, concert, and costume contest with cash prizes. To participate in the costume march parade and costume contest, registration is required and will begin at 6 p.m.
The parade will travel from Kingston Street to Third Avenue, continue along Laurel Street, and end at the Town Green. After the parade, Ghoul Vibrations will bring ghoulish grooves with a live concert at the Town Green, located at 200 Laurel Street. Costume contest winners will be announced following the show.
Midnight Market
Stroll through this spooky vendor market on the "Town Scream" for handmade arts and crafts, sweet treats, and even hair braiding. The market will take place every Thursday-Sunday from 6 -9 p.m., October 1 through November 1 (weather permitting).
Last year, local vendors spoke to how they feel events such as the Midnight Market bolster small businesses in Conway, and give vendors the chance to participate in different, unique atmosphere special to the season.

Conway Ghost Walk
Conway Downtown Alive will present the Conway Ghost Walk on October 14-16. Professional storytellers will tell tales of Lowcountry ghost stories while leading a nighttime walk beneath the oaks of the Historic Conwayborough Residential District.
Stories are promised to be spooky, sometimes humorous, and family friendly.
Located at the Conway Visitor's Center, this runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Purchase tickets here.
