What is Medicare?

If you're approaching the golden years of your life, it's important you understand what Medicare is if you don't already.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program reserved for people older than 65 who have worked full-time for at least ten years. The Medicare program is paid for by a combination of worker payroll tax, premiums paid by Medicare enrollees, and the U.S. government.

There are four parts of Medicare:

Senior Medicare Plans El Paso, TX
A

This type of Medicare is free for most U.S. citizens. Medicare Part A helps older adults pay for care in a nursing facility, hospital visits, and some forms of in-home senior care.

B

This tier costs around $100 per month. It covers different outpatient services like lab tests, preventative care, doctor's visits, mental health care, clinical trials, and some forms of surgery.

C

This type of Medicare is most often called Medicare Advantage. This tier of Medicare allows seniors to choose health plans provided by insurance companies like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. Individuals who use Medicare Advantage commonly use Medicare supplement plan insurance to help pay for health care costs that Original Medicare won't cover, like coinsurance, deductibles, and copayments.

D

Sometimes called "PDPs," these plans add drug coverage to standard Medicare, some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS), some Medicare Cost Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans (MSA).

The amount of money you pay for your health care depends on several factors, including:

At Senior Medicare Insurance Services, we offer a number of health insurance solutions for seniors. Two of our most used services include Medicare Advantage plan insurance and Medicare supplement plan insurance.

Senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in El Paso, TX

Sometimes called Medigap, the purpose of Medicare Supplement Insurance is to help fill in "gaps" that might not be covered by Original Medicare. You can think of a Medigap policy as a supplement for your Original Medicare benefits.

Private companies like Senior Medicare Insurance Services sell this type of insurance right here in South Carolina. While Original Medicare will pay for much of the cost associated with health care services you need, it may not cover all of your expenses. Generally, Medigap policies do not cover costs stemming from eyeglasses, private-duty nurses, dental care, hearing aids, or long-term care.

Depending on the Medicare Supplement Plan that you choose, it may cover out-of-the-country medical services when you travel abroad. Assuming you have Original Medicare coverage, your policy will cover its share of Medicare-approved health care costs. Once your Original Medicare coverage reaches its limit, your Medigap policy will pay its share of the fees.

Our Medigap policies are drafted to meet your specific needs, and can help cover remaining health care costs such as:

Deductibles

Copayments

Coinsurance

Important Information About Senior Supplement Plan Insurance

To dispel some confusion, you should know that a Medigap policy is not the same as a Medicare Advantage Plan. The latter helps you receive Medicare benefits, while the former supplements the benefits you obtain through your Original Medicare plan. As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:

Medicare Plans El Paso, TX

As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:

  • To qualify for a Medigap policy, you must first have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
  • Payments on your Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan will be made to the private insurance company that you choose, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. These payments are made every month and are paid in addition to the monthly payment you make for Medicare Part B.
  • If you are the holder of a Medicare Advantage Plan, it is illegal for an insurance company to sell you a senior Medicare Supplement Policy. If you plan on switching back to an Original Medicare plan, you may be able to purchase a Medigap policy.
  • If you have health problems as you age, your standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed to be renewable. So long as you pay your monthly premium, your insurance provider cannot cancel your policy.
  • Medigap policies only cover one person. If you have a spouse or family member that would like coverage, they must purchase a separate policy.
  • You may only buy a Senior Medicare Supplement Plan from an insurance agent that is licensed to sell them in your state. Senior Medicare Insurance Services has been licensed to sell Medigap policies in South Carolina for years. We have helped countless seniors get the Medicare coverage they need and continue to do so to this day.
  • In the past, Medigap policies were able to cover costs related to prescription drugs. As of January 1st, 2006, prescription drug coverage is not available on Medicare Supplement Plans. The best way to get coverage for your prescription drugs is to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, often called Part D. Contact our office today to learn more about paying premiums on Medigap and Medicare plans.

For many people, the best time to buy senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in El Paso, TX is during the 7 months Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This period starts the day you turn 65 years old, so long as you hold Medical Insurance (Medicare Part B). Generally, during the enrollment period, you get more policy choices and better pricing. Once the enrollment period is over, you may not be able to purchase a Medigap policy. Contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services today to determine if you qualify for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan.

A Medicare Advantage Plan is a kind of Medicare health coverage designed to provide seniors with all their Part A and Part B Medicare benefits. Many Medicare Advantage Plans will often include coverage of the following:

Senior Health Insurance El Paso, TX

In addition, most Medicare Advantage Plans give seniors coverage for their prescription drug needs. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan through Senior Medicare Insurance Services, your Medicare benefits are covered through your plan and will not be paid for by traditional Medicare.

How Medicare Advantage Plans Work

Sometimes called "MA Plans" or "Part C," Medicare Advantage Plans are considered an "all in one" solution to Original Medicare. Senior Medicare Advantage Plans are only offered by private companies that are approved, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. Seniors who enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan are still on Medicare. However, these individuals enjoy bundled plans that give seniors the benefits of hospital insurance (Medicare Part A), medical insurance (Medicare Part B), and sometimes drug coverage (Part D).

Medicare Advantage Plans are very popular because they cover all Medicare services and make life a little easier for seniors who have trouble understanding the nuances of Medicare.

When you contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services to choose your Medicare Advantage Plan, ask your agent about Medicare prescription drug coverage. Unless you already have drug coverage (Part D), you should seriously consider Part D coverage to help reduce costs associated with prescription drugs. You may also want to consider a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan to help fill gaps in coverage that Original Medicare will not cover.

  • If you must go to facilities, suppliers, or doctors that belong to your Advantage Plan for non-urgent and non-emergency care.
  • Whether you must get a referral to see a specialized doctor

We encourage you to contact our office today to learn more about Medicare Advantage Plans, how they work, what your options are, and how often you will have to pay out-of-pocket, if at all.

Yet another round of layoffs is expected to strike San Antonio residents before the year's end. It comes amid recent data showing the average unemployment rate in Texas lingering above the national average.

The latest sweep is impacting San Antonio- and El Paso-area Grunt Style LLC employees, according to a Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notification (WARN) notice from the Texas Workforce Commission. Two notices were recorded on Friday, October 2, stating that 28 people will be laid off.

Alamo City residents will see the most, with a count of 19, per the Texas Workforce Commission. Nine individuals at the El Paso shop will be let go. For both, the layoff start date is listed as Monday, November 30. The San Antonio spot sits at 900 Broadway, and the El Paso-area store is in Canutillo.

Grunt Style is an online and in-person clothing business that describes its mission as "bringing patriotic apparel to every home in America." Founded in 2009 by Daniel Alarik, a former Army drill sergeant, the brand's items feature flags, weapons, and military-related phrases. The company is veteran-owned and operated, with 13 locations across the U.S.

The company has faced some controversy in recent years. In 2020, Alarik was ousted as CEO, a past MySA report cites. That same year, he sued the company, alleging a contract violation. Alarik claimed the company fired him without proper compensation or medical coverage amid his wife's battle with cancer. Grunt Style officials argued against Alarik's claims and released screenshots of emails allegedly showing offers to cover medical expenses until negotiations could be resolved.

The current CEO is Kevin Corning, a Northwestern University graduate who stepped into the role in October 2025, according to LinkedIn.

Also in 2020, the San Antonio Express-News reported on claims from some employees, who alleged that the workplace environment was volatile and featured drinking, with at least one referring to it as a "frat house."

The following year, the company launched the Grunt Style Foundation, a nonprofit that supports military transitions and sustainment, food insecurity, and homelessness, according to the company's website.

Most recently, Grunt Style LLC enjoyed a win when, in June 2026, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a lower court's ruling in favor of Grunt Style LLC and against TWD, a California party that also sells goods with military-related trademarks, according to online records. TWD filed a complaint against Grunt Style LLC in 2018 alleging trademark infringement, as both sold merchandise with the phrase "This We'll Defend."

"The district court found that Grunt Style had established common-law priority in the mark, and dismissed TWD’s claims and cancelled its federal registration," the order states. "The case went to trial on Grunt Style’s counterclaims, and a jury found TWD liable for infringement."

Grunt Style was awarded damages and pre- and post-judgment interest, and the court ordered TWD to stop future use of the mark, court records state.

Grunt Style layoffs outside of Texas

The layoffs are not limited to Texas, per the Springfield Business Journal. The online newspaper reports that 10 layoffs are planned for the Grunt Style at Tanger Outlets Branson in Missouri, also effective next month.

MySA reached out to Grunt Style via phone and email but did not receive a response regarding the layoffs in time for publication.

EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — El Paso Water increased its monthly allocation to the AguaCares assistance program to $10,000 last month, up from $8,000 the month before. Even with the increase, the program still exhausted its monthly funds by September 17.

El Paso Water says demand continues to outpace available funding for customers struggling to pay overdue water bills.

AguaCares assists customers who are at risk of disconnection and qualify for financial help paying overdue water bills.

Customers can receive up to $250 per year; that amount can either be used all at once or divided depending on the need,

So far this year, El Paso Water has distributed more than $75,000 in assistance, with nearly 400 applications approved.

RECOMMENDED: El Paso Water seeks public input on four budget paths that could affect rates

El Paso Water Chief Communications Officer Lisa Rosendorf said the program is funded through a mix of sources, including $ 50,000 provided annually by the City of El Paso.

“We do have some seed money from the city each year; we get customer donations, and we seek other types of donations. We end up having between 80,000-100,000 per year, which is not a lot,” Rosendorf said. “We are only able to help 50 customers or so per month; so far this year we are mostly meeting our demand.”

Rosendorf said the utility is trying to balance infrastructure needs with affordability. “We do realize affordability is very important right now, and we are trying to find that right balance between the investments need to make in infrastructure and affordability,” she said.

To qualify for the program, customers must have an account with El Paso Water and show they are at risk of having their water cut off. Applicants must also live in a single-family residence inside city limits.

Residents say rising utility costs are making it harder to keep up with bills.

“It’s really hard for some people; it makes it hard to pay because you’re on a set amount. Especially for students, it’s really hard to deal with that if you're renting because it costs so much to live now,” Damien Martinez said.

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Texas Comptroller Dan Huffines announced that El Paso Independent School District, along with other Texas school districts, will face performance reviews of its budget spending.

Austin, Barbers Hill, El Paso, and Prosper school districts were selected for the detailed review to ensure responsible use of taxpayer funds, according to the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.

Below are the numbers of enrolled students for the selected school districts for the 2025-26 school year:

In August, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott held a press conference in El Paso, where he addressed school efficiency and taxpayer dollars.

He claimed El Paso ISD’s finances had “spiraled out of control.”

Abbott noted that from 2015 to 2025, enrollment at El Paso ISD had declined by around 20 percent, but administrative spending per student increased by 100 percent.

Under his proposal, school districts would be required to use 70 percent of their budget on classroom-related expenses to reduce “unnecessary spending.”

“This review is an important step to ensure transparency, accountability, and the responsible use of public funds,” Huffines said. “I’ve informed Gov. Greg Abbott about the school districts we are examining. Our office is committed to providing a clear assessment that helps Texans understand how their education dollars are being used.”

Requested by Abbott, the Huffines Performance Review will determine if district spending abides by state law and is directed toward students, classrooms, and teachers.

Officials stated the final report will be completed by Dec. 31, providing the 90th Legislature sufficient time to consider any recommendations for reform.

Media Relations Coordinator for El Paso ISD, Ernest Chacon, provided a statement to KTSM:

“El Paso ISD’s strong academic gains in the Texas Education Agency accountability ratings, including a two-point increase over last year’s score and the district’s highest gains in five years, reflect its steadfast commitment to student success and directing resources to the classroom.”

Since Dr. Brian Lusk became superintendent in December 2025, the district has reduced 326 central-office and non-campus positions, eliminated vacancies, reassessed contracts, streamlined operating expenses, and strengthened financial controls and transparency, Chacon said.

“El Paso ISD will continue working to improve efficiency and align resources with current needs while partnering with the State of Texas to advance outcomes for El Paso’s children.”
