HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — For a lot of Queen City slickers, the chance to enjoy a rural setting is rare.
Maybe that’s why parents bring their kids to appreciate the simple life at Sweetwater Farms in Huntersville.
“Look at that!” we heard, as three boys took turns sitting on a tractor.
“[My son] loves that you can kind of go and run and be free and have a good time,” she told Queen City News.
“I can just enjoy watching him be a kid outside and not be stuck inside,” says Brendle.
Instead of streaming movies, here families find entertainment by frolicking in a stream. The hope is that this rural setting gives you the feels.
“We are a ‘feeling farm.’ Kids come here; they gain confidence,” said owner Suzan Lurz.
Lurz says at first her grand vision looked great on paper. The plot within the pages of her book was the inspiration for Sweetwater Farms.
“I want you to listen to the words and believe in them,” she said, reading an excerpt aloud.
Susan is a children’s book author. Her first published book was The Sweetwater Animal Society.
In a way, her words jump off the page and onto the farm where families now experience something refreshing.
That book gave her the blueprint.
“It occurred to me that this would be the perfect place to build the real Sweetwater Farms,” Lurz said.
That’s right, she turned fiction into a farm.
“This whole place is based off of the feeling and emotions that come from this book,” she says.
But the real special of the day is a change of pace.
“We read a lot of books with animals,” said Tiffany Yasin, there with the Charlotte mom’s group. “So, for them to get out and see them, interact with them, being able to see them, touch them.“
“The kids love it, but as adults we love it,” says Lurz. “It just makes us feel a certain way to be out with the animals and in nature.”
Sometimes, writers are inspired to create a new chapter. In this case, it brings literature to life.
Lurz says she’s been working on more children’s books. She’ll also continue to operate Sweetwater Farms.
“It’s a feeling I can’t describe because it makes me so happy,” Lurz said.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A proposed rezoning of a property adjacent to a Huntersville subdivision is bringing back harsh memories for neighbors.
Patrick Coll told town commissioners Tuesday that he was walking his dog in the Northbrook neighborhood last Thanksgiving when he was hit by a pickup truck.
Coll says he suffered injuries to his skull, brain, eye and ribs. He was out of work for three months.
Now an amendment from prominent north Mecklenburg developer Joe Palillo would likely bring more cut-through traffic down Maple Branch Drive and Retreat Drive.
The neighborhood sits in the middle of Sam Furr Road and McCord Road. Two years ago, a rezoning allowed for a daycare to be built on Maple Branch at the intersection with Sam Furr (N.C. 73).
Now Palillo, through his company Bi-Part Development, wants to fully utilize the 3.4 acres behind the New Horizon Academy lot. He wants to add two flex buildings split into four units that would have a separate driveway from the daycare on Maple Branch.
The property is zoned Special Use, and falls within the Employee Center land use in the town’s 2040 Community Plan. The buildings would have 17 parking spots.
In addition to Coll’s testimony, other neighbors urged commissioners to consider safety and turn down the proposal. The speed limit on Maple Branch is 25 mph, and there is one speed bump and a traffic circle.
Palillo said the flex buildings are a hot commodity in the Charlotte area. They’re typically utilized by contractors and small retailers.
He argued that using the existing neighborhood street would actually decrease the town’s liability, and creating a new one would be “a great expense.”
“Town doesn’t have long-term liability on maintaining roads,” Palillo explained. “In the northern part of the country, the tax base is out of sight because they’re always maintaining infrastructure.”
The town’s planning board will review the plan on July 28, followed by a final decision by the commissioners Aug. 18. The planning staff previously approved the changes.
