COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Irmo Town Council voted 3-2 Tuesday night to approve the first reading of a rezoning request from Long Key Development for a proposed 300-unit apartment complex on Columbiana Drive.
The plan includes reserving 10 percent of units for seniors and first responders. The rezoning must pass two additional readings before receiving final approval. The next reading is scheduled for Aug. 18.
Residents voice opposition
Several residents addressed the council Tuesday, raising concerns about increased traffic and the impact on their quality of life. Jerry Yates, who lives about a mile from the proposed site, said the pace of development in Irmo is moving too quickly.
“Change is coming too fast here — it’s too rapid,” Yates said. “It needs to come slowly; now everything is coming too quickly. It’s going to be a problem.”
Council divided on the vote
Council Member Gabriel Penfield was one of the two votes against the rezoning. After hearing from residents, Penfield said he did not believe the plan was the right fit for Irmo.
“Growth is inevitable,” Penfield said. “I think it’s important that we act intentionally and make sure we don’t swing at every pitch that comes across the plate. Every time we make an increase in occupancy, we put more burden on our resources. While we are grateful to have a developer come to our town, we want to make sure we are using the land’s highest and best purpose.”
Council members who voted in favor of the rezoning did not respond to a request for comment.

Florida defeats South Carolina, earns a day off, spot in regional semifinals
After Landon DelPrado's 66 pitches, Hayden Butler came on to pitch the sixth inning and got a 1-2-3 frame with a flyout and two groundouts, helping Chaires win, 8-1. The Floridians get the day off and advance to the regional semifinal at 1 p.m. Sunday on ESPN against either Tennessee or Alabama. A win Sunday would put Florida in Tuesday's regional championship game for a spot in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Florida gets run back, in control entering sixth inning
Chaires didn't waste time getting that run back. Kai Stephens and Landon DelPrado hit back-to-back singles to begin the bottom of the fifth, and Harrison Pawelczyk's walk loaded the bases for Camden Arnold. The fifth-place hitter didn't disappoint with a single to center to make it 6-1.
After another pitching change, a wild pitch allowed DelPrado to score. After an Everett Fiore walk, another wild pitch made it 8-1 with Pawelczyk scoring.
Florida loses shutout vs South Carolina in fifth inning
Landon DelPrado had to dig deep after Irmo, South Carolina, began to show some life at the plate. Three separate singles, the latter by Badger Lewter, helped South Carolina get on the board with a run with one out. The bases were eventually loaded when DelPrado forced a 5-2-3 double play to end the scoring threat and maintain a four-run advantage.

The boys from Chaires added on a few more in the fourth inning. Everett Fiore led off with a single, and after Jordan Murray walked, Jacob Ross was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Then, Oliver Prowant singled to left, scoring Fiore and Murray scored on an error on the play. After Hayden Butler was hit by a pitch, a wild pitch allowed Ross to make it 5-0.
Florida getting solid pitching vs. South Carolina
Landon DelPrado continues to make the 2-0 lead hold up. The big right-hander has retired 11 in a row, which has included five strikeouts, and has yet to walk a hitter has he has faced just one over the minimum.

In the bottom of the second inning, Chaires-Capitola drew first blood. With two outs, Jacob Ross hit a double down the right field line. Then Oliver Prowant and Harrison Butler drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Then, Kenny Chen was hit by a pitch, driving in the game's first run. It also ended the day on the mound for Badger Lewter.
Irmo center fielder Jaxon Owens, a hard-throwing left-hander, was put on the mound. But Preston Bikus drew a walk, forcing in a second run.
Florida thrown out at home to end first inning, keep game scoreless
Team Florida seemed poised to score first in the first inning against South Carolina pitcher Badger Lewter. With one out, Kai Stephens singled and Landon Del Prado drew a walk. Then with two away, Camden Arnold singled to left, sending Stephens home. But an excellent, one-hop throw from left fielder Liam Snellgrove nailed Stephens at the plate to end the first.

Landon Del Prado took the mound to begin the game for Chaires-Capitola Little League out of Tallahassee. He gave up a one-out single, but followed it with a strikeout and a groundout to keep Irmo, South Carolina, off the board in the opening frame.
