Trying to pick a health insurance plan can be a chore for anyone. For many people, just mentioning the word "open enrollment" sends shivers down the spine. It seems like there's always a nagging feeling that you're wasting money, choosing a plan with poor in-network care, or both. One would think that health insurance gets easier as you approach retirement age, but the truth is that picking an initial Medicare coverage plan can be daunting.
Unfortunately, the confusing process of signing up for Medicare causes many seniors to forego healthcare coverage altogether. After all, Medicare enrollment can involve several federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration (or SSA) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (or CMS).
At Senior Medicare Insurance Services, our passion is guiding seniors through the confusion of Medicare. That way, they can enjoy retirement with peace of mind knowing they are protected and ready for life after 65. We work with dozens of insurance companies, giving our clients the chance to choose a plan that best fits their lifestyle.
We choose to design our senior insurance plans with a focus on optimal benefits structure, lower costs, and personalized service. What is Medicare?
If you're approaching the golden years of your life, it's important you understand what Medicare is if you don't already.
Medicare is a federal health insurance program reserved for people older than 65 who have worked full-time for at least ten years. The Medicare program is paid for by a combination of worker payroll tax, premiums paid by Medicare enrollees, and the U.S. government.
There are four parts of Medicare:

The amount of money you pay for your health care depends on several factors, including:
- What kind of care you need, and how often it is needed.
- The type of Medicare coverage you choose.
- Whether there are alternative insurance policies that will help fill gaps in your coverage
- Whether a doctor agrees to charge you the same amount that Medicare will cover for a medical service
At Senior Medicare Insurance Services, we offer a number of health insurance solutions for seniors. Two of our most used services include Medicare Advantage plan insurance and Medicare supplement plan insurance.
Senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Prescott, AZ
Sometimes called Medigap, the purpose of Medicare Supplement Insurance is to help fill in "gaps" that might not be covered by Original Medicare. You can think of a Medigap policy as a supplement for your Original Medicare benefits.
Private companies like Senior Medicare Insurance Services sell this type of insurance right here in South Carolina. While Original Medicare will pay for much of the cost associated with health care services you need, it may not cover all of your expenses. Generally, Medigap policies do not cover costs stemming from eyeglasses, private-duty nurses, dental care, hearing aids, or long-term care.
Depending on the Medicare Supplement Plan that you choose, it may cover out-of-the-country medical services when you travel abroad. Assuming you have Original Medicare coverage, your policy will cover its share of Medicare-approved health care costs. Once your Original Medicare coverage reaches its limit, your Medigap policy will pay its share of the fees.
Our Medigap policies are drafted to meet your specific needs, and can help cover remaining health care costs such as:
Deductibles
Copayments
Coinsurance
Important Information About Senior Supplement Plan Insurance
To dispel some confusion, you should know that a Medigap policy is not the same as a Medicare Advantage Plan. The latter helps you receive Medicare benefits, while the former supplements the benefits you obtain through your Original Medicare plan. As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:
As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:
- To qualify for a Medigap policy, you must first have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
- Payments on your Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan will be made to the private insurance company that you choose, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. These payments are made every month and are paid in addition to the monthly payment you make for Medicare Part B.
- If you are the holder of a Medicare Advantage Plan, it is illegal for an insurance company to sell you a senior Medicare Supplement Policy. If you plan on switching back to an Original Medicare plan, you may be able to purchase a Medigap policy.
- If you have health problems as you age, your standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed to be renewable. So long as you pay your monthly premium, your insurance provider cannot cancel your policy.
- Medigap policies only cover one person. If you have a spouse or family member that would like coverage, they must purchase a separate policy.
- You may only buy a Senior Medicare Supplement Plan from an insurance agent that is licensed to sell them in your state. Senior Medicare Insurance Services has been licensed to sell Medigap policies in South Carolina for years. We have helped countless seniors get the Medicare coverage they need and continue to do so to this day.
- In the past, Medigap policies were able to cover costs related to prescription drugs. As of January 1st, 2006, prescription drug coverage is not available on Medicare Supplement Plans. The best way to get coverage for your prescription drugs is to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, often called Part D. Contact our office today to learn more about paying premiums on Medigap and Medicare plans.
For many people, the best time to buy senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Prescott, AZ is during the 7 months Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This period starts the day you turn 65 years old, so long as you hold Medical Insurance (Medicare Part B). Generally, during the enrollment period, you get more policy choices and better pricing. Once the enrollment period is over, you may not be able to purchase a Medigap policy. Contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services today to determine if you qualify for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan.
Medicare Agent in Prescott, AZ
A Medicare Advantage Plan is a kind of Medicare health coverage designed to provide seniors with all their Part A and Part B Medicare benefits. Many Medicare Advantage Plans will often include coverage of the following:
- Preferred Provider Organizations
- Special Needs Plans
- Private Fee-for-Service
- Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans
- Health Maintenance Organizations
In addition, most Medicare Advantage Plans give seniors coverage for their prescription drug needs. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan through Senior Medicare Insurance Services, your Medicare benefits are covered through your plan and will not be paid for by traditional Medicare.
How Medicare Advantage Plans Work
Sometimes called "MA Plans" or "Part C," Medicare Advantage Plans are considered an "all in one" solution to Original Medicare. Senior Medicare Advantage Plans are only offered by private companies that are approved, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. Seniors who enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan are still on Medicare. However, these individuals enjoy bundled plans that give seniors the benefits of hospital insurance (Medicare Part A), medical insurance (Medicare Part B), and sometimes drug coverage (Part D).
Medicare Advantage Plans are very popular because they cover all Medicare services and make life a little easier for seniors who have trouble understanding the nuances of Medicare.
When you contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services to choose your Medicare Advantage Plan, ask your agent about Medicare prescription drug coverage. Unless you already have drug coverage (Part D), you should seriously consider Part D coverage to help reduce costs associated with prescription drugs. You may also want to consider a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan to help fill gaps in coverage that Original Medicare will not cover.
Medicare Advantage Plan Insurance Rules
Medicare works by paying a set amount of money to the companies that offer Medicare Agent in Prescott, AZ. That money is used to pay for the care services that you need. Because Medicare Advantage Plans are different, you should expect out-of-pocket costs to vary depending on the plan you choose.
Different plans have different rules for how you receive services, such as:
If you must go to facilities, suppliers, or doctors that belong to your Advantage Plan for non-urgent and non-emergency care.-
Whether you must get a referral to see a specialized doctor
Companies that offer Medicare Advantage Plans must follow strict rules, which are set by Medicare and can change every year.
Paying for Your Medicare Agent
How much you pay for your Medicare Advantage Plan varies and depends on a few different factors. In most cases, if you need a kind of medical service, you will need to rely on the doctors and providers in your plan's service area and network to pay the lowest amounts. In some cases, if you choose to use a service outside of your plan's network of coverage, you may have to pay out-of-pocket.
We encourage you to contact our office today to learn more about Medicare Advantage Plans, how they work, what your options are, and how often you will have to pay out-of-pocket, if at all.

PRESCOTT, AZ ― Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System announced today it has earned a five-star rating as part of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services 2025 hospital quality ratings.
CMS’s hospital ratings are based on five categories: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience and timely and effective care. A higher star rating, out of 5, indicates better performance on these quality measures.
Within the last year, Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System has instituted a number of improvements to better serve Veterans by focusing on creating a more integrated, responsive and patient-centered healthcare environment. Examples of this are:
Strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration to improve follow-up care for chronic heart failure and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients and, therefore, reduce readmissions.
Enhancing mental health integration, including consultations and proactive scheduling for patients with substance use disorders.
Expanding patient experience initiatives through improved communication and structured feedback programs.
Launching a patient-rounding program led by the Veteran Experience Officer to gather feedback and address concerns in real time.
"Our 5-star rating highlights the excellent care our staff provides at our main hospital in Prescott and 11 other community clinics throughout northern Arizona,” said Steven Sample, Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System’s Executive Director. “Our mission is to continue raising the bar for customer service and convenience throughout our healthcare system, so the Northern Arizona VA works better for the Veterans, families, caregivers and survivors we are honored to serve.”
As part of CMS’s 2025 ratings, 77% of VA hospitals that received an Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating received 4 or 5 stars, and no VA hospitals received a one-star rating. More than 90% of VA hospitals with ratings maintained or improved their 2024-star rating.

VA is processing record numbers of disability claims, reaching an all-time fiscal-year high of 2.52 million ratings claims for FY25 as of Aug. 8.

VA is accelerating the deployment of its integrated electronic health record system.
VA partnered with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to identify and recover $106 million in duplicate billing.

PRESCOTT, AZ (AZFamily) — A former executive director will spend over six decades behind bars for stealing thousands of dollars from the northern Arizona nonprofit she worked for.
Yavapai County Attorney Dennis McGrane announced that Karen Northcutt, 62, was sentenced to 62.5 years in prison in the embezzlement case. She previously served as the executive director for the Prescott Area Habitat for Humanity (PAHH).
The investigation began in Feb. 2024 when an anonymous tip indicated that Northcutt was stealing money from the organization. Officials found that she used the nonprofit’s bank and credit card accounts to pay her mortgage, utilities, renovate her home, buy vehicles and other items.
Investigators say she also used the money to pay for veterinarian bills, vacations, food, personal legal fees, taxes and a shipping container.
Northcutt withdrew over $100,000 in cash and opened up an unauthorized credit card account, where she charged $187,000. In total, officials say she stole $826,000 from the charity.
McGrane didn’t mince his words following Northcutt’s conviction, calling her actions “despicable” and “selfish.”
“Ms. Northcutt’s conviction sends a clear message that no one is above the law. Ms. Northcutt’s selfish choice to steal from a charity hurt many needy local families and tarnished the trust that the public has in our charitable institutions. Her actions are despicable, and I hope the lengthy sentence that Ms. Northcutt received will send a strong message that fraud and thefts will always be vigorously prosecuted by my Office,” McGrane said.
Northcutt was found guilty on charges of fraudulent schemes and artifices, theft, taking the identification of another, tampering with physical evidence, trafficking stolen property and money laundering.

Legado Apartments of Prescott Valley AZ to Launch Leasing for Phase I

Founders Building Group, LLC, the in-house general contracting arm of Fain Signature Group, is actively preparing to pursue a Certificate of Occupancy (CO) for Phase I of Legado Apartments — a 329-unit mixed-use development located at 7221 E. Florentine Road in downtown Prescott Valley. Phase I encompasses 120 residential units, with the CO targeted for September–October 2026. Property management firm PB Bell is expected to begin the formal leasing process within the coming weeks.
The full Legado community — 329 units across one-, two-, and three-bedroom floor plans — is anticipated to reach full completion in a subsequent phase of construction. With Phase I now approaching final inspections, Legado marks a defining chapter in Prescott Valley’s downtown evolution and a testament to the Fain family’s six-decade commitment to Central Arizona. The project’s road to this milestone has been extraordinary. The six-story mixed-use mid-rise was approximately 50 percent complete when a catastrophic arson fire on April 1, 2024 caused extensive damage across 685,000 square feet of construction. Rather than walk away,Fain Signature Group dug in — establishing Founders Building Group, LLC, a fully integrated, in-house general contracting firm — and committed to a complete rebuild. That grit has carried Legado to where it stands today.
Legado is designed as a true mixed-use community, anchored by approximately 6,000 square feet of first-floor retail along Florentine Road and a sixth-floor restaurant with what is expected to be among the most compelling elevated views in Prescott Valley.
Fain Signature Group has already secured operators for two of the signature commercial spaces: a gastropub and a market are confirmed tenants for the first-floor retail corridor, and an operator is in place for the sixth-floor restaurant. An additional 3,061 square feet of first-floor retail remains available for lease, presenting a compelling opportunity for retailers, service businesses, or food-and-beverage operators seeking a high-visibility address in Prescott Valley’s most active commercial district. Commercial leasing inquiries may be directed to Fain Signature Group directly.
Prescott Valley has experienced sustained population growth, rising household formation, and strong rental demand over the past several years. The Legado community arrives at a moment when the Prescott Valley Town Center corridor is emerging as the region’s premier mixed-use destination, adjacent to dining, entertainment, and retail amenities. The addition of 329 units — beginning with Phase I’s 120 homes — will meaningfully expand the rental supply in a market where inventory has consistently lagged demand.
Pre-leasing inquiries, floor plan information, and availability can be found at , managed by PB Bell. Updates on construction progress and project milestones are published regularly at FainSignatureGroup.com and covered locally by SignalsAZ.com .

Nearly three inches of rain in under an hour prompted residents to ask: are they covered?
PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ (AZFamily) — Nearly three inches of rain fell in less than an hour Monday, triggering flooding that destroyed homes and property across Prescott Valley. The storm overwhelmed drainage culverts designed to carry water away from the area, according to Prescott Valley officials.
The flooding has left some residents without insurance coverage and has prompted questions about what their policies actually include.
What standard homeowners insurance covers and what it doesn’t
Standard homeowners insurance policies in Arizona do not cover water that flows in from the ground, said Brent Bartz, an insurance agent with Integra Insurance Group in Surprise.
“In Arizona standard home insurance doesn’t cover water flowing from the ground level in, so you’ll have to make flood insurance separate,” Bartz said.
Under state law, residents who live in a floodplain, whether they rent or own, are responsible for purchasing separate flood insurance.
How to find out if you’re in a flood zone
Bartz said determining flood zone status falls on the buyer or renter, not the seller.
“Sellers are only required to disclose what they actually know placing the primary research on the buyer,” Bartz said.
Residents can find out their flood risk in several ways:
Bartz noted that FEMA maps are not always current. The flood map for North Fulton Drive in Prescott Valley, where major flooding occurred this week, was last updated in 2024.
FEMA updates maps on a rolling basis or following a disaster, meaning some areas may go years without a revision.
“And if that info is outdated you can only go off history — if it flooded once it’s probably going to be flooding in the future too,” Bartz said.
Residents without coverage after this week’s flooding
Some residents in at least one Prescott Valley apartment building that flooded said they did not have insurance and had not experienced flooding of that severity before.
Bartz said cost is often the reason people skip flood coverage, but urged residents to weigh the risk.
“When it comes to cost, I get it, the last thing they want to do is get a flood policy even if they aren’t in a flood plain. But if you’re trying to protect yourself it could be a necessary thing,” Bartz said.
A Prescott Valley spokesperson said no new development is proposed or being considered on state land west of Viewpoint Drive near Fulton Drive. The town indicated there have been no recent development actions in that area that would have affected the terrain or water-retention efforts.
“In that area, culverts under Viewpoint Drive are designed to slow down the flow of stormwater, which they did. However, due to the scale of Monday’s storm, drainage systems are simply not built to handle that much water coming down in such a short period. Without those culverts in place, the flooding could have extended for several more blocks.
Additionally, some structures in that flood zone, including the impacted triplex, were built prior to the Town’s incorporation, meaning current building codes and standards did not exist at the time."
