One would think that health insurance gets easier as you approach retirement age, but the truth is that picking an initial Medicare coverage plan can be daunting.
Unfortunately, the confusing process of signing up for Medicare causes many seniors to forego healthcare coverage altogether. After all, Medicare enrollment can involve several federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration (or SSA) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (or CMS).

That way, they can enjoy retirement with peace of mind knowing they are protected and ready for life after 65. What is Medicare?
If you're approaching the golden years of your life, it's important you understand what Medicare is if you don't already.
Medicare is a federal health insurance program reserved for people older than 65 who have worked full-time for at least ten years. The Medicare program is paid for by a combination of worker payroll tax, premiums paid by Medicare enrollees, and the U.S. government.
There are four parts of Medicare:

The amount of money you pay for your health care depends on several factors, including:
- What kind of care you need, and how often it is needed.
- The type of Medicare coverage you choose.
- Whether there are alternative insurance policies that will help fill gaps in your coverage
- Whether a doctor agrees to charge you the same amount that Medicare will cover for a medical service
At Senior Medicare Insurance Services, we offer a number of health insurance solutions for seniors. Two of our most used services include Medicare Advantage plan insurance and Medicare supplement plan insurance.
Senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Round Rock, TX
Sometimes called Medigap, the purpose of Medicare Supplement Insurance is to help fill in "gaps" that might not be covered by Original Medicare. You can think of a Medigap policy as a supplement for your Original Medicare benefits.
Private companies like Senior Medicare Insurance Services sell this type of insurance right here in South Carolina. While Original Medicare will pay for much of the cost associated with health care services you need, it may not cover all of your expenses. Generally, Medigap policies do not cover costs stemming from eyeglasses, private-duty nurses, dental care, hearing aids, or long-term care.
Depending on the Medicare Supplement Plan that you choose, it may cover out-of-the-country medical services when you travel abroad. Assuming you have Original Medicare coverage, your policy will cover its share of Medicare-approved health care costs. Once your Original Medicare coverage reaches its limit, your Medigap policy will pay its share of the fees.
Our Medigap policies are drafted to meet your specific needs, and can help cover remaining health care costs such as:
Deductibles
Copayments
Coinsurance
Important Information About Senior Supplement Plan Insurance
To dispel some confusion, you should know that a Medigap policy is not the same as a Medicare Advantage Plan. The latter helps you receive Medicare benefits, while the former supplements the benefits you obtain through your Original Medicare plan. As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:
As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:
- To qualify for a Medigap policy, you must first have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
- Payments on your Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan will be made to the private insurance company that you choose, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. These payments are made every month and are paid in addition to the monthly payment you make for Medicare Part B.
- If you are the holder of a Medicare Advantage Plan, it is illegal for an insurance company to sell you a senior Medicare Supplement Policy. If you plan on switching back to an Original Medicare plan, you may be able to purchase a Medigap policy.
- If you have health problems as you age, your standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed to be renewable. So long as you pay your monthly premium, your insurance provider cannot cancel your policy.
- Medigap policies only cover one person. If you have a spouse or family member that would like coverage, they must purchase a separate policy.
- You may only buy a Senior Medicare Supplement Plan from an insurance agent that is licensed to sell them in your state. Senior Medicare Insurance Services has been licensed to sell Medigap policies in South Carolina for years. We have helped countless seniors get the Medicare coverage they need and continue to do so to this day.
- In the past, Medigap policies were able to cover costs related to prescription drugs. As of January 1st, 2006, prescription drug coverage is not available on Medicare Supplement Plans. The best way to get coverage for your prescription drugs is to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, often called Part D. Contact our office today to learn more about paying premiums on Medigap and Medicare plans.
For many people, the best time to buy senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Round Rock, TX is during the 7 months Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This period starts the day you turn 65 years old, so long as you hold Medical Insurance (Medicare Part B). Generally, during the enrollment period, you get more policy choices and better pricing. Once the enrollment period is over, you may not be able to purchase a Medigap policy. Contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services today to determine if you qualify for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan.
Medicare Agent in Round Rock, TX
A Medicare Advantage Plan is a kind of Medicare health coverage designed to provide seniors with all their Part A and Part B Medicare benefits. Many Medicare Advantage Plans will often include coverage of the following:
- Preferred Provider Organizations
- Special Needs Plans
- Private Fee-for-Service
- Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans
- Health Maintenance Organizations
In addition, most Medicare Advantage Plans give seniors coverage for their prescription drug needs. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan through Senior Medicare Insurance Services, your Medicare benefits are covered through your plan and will not be paid for by traditional Medicare.
How Medicare Advantage Plans Work
Sometimes called "MA Plans" or "Part C," Medicare Advantage Plans are considered an "all in one" solution to Original Medicare. Senior Medicare Advantage Plans are only offered by private companies that are approved, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. Seniors who enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan are still on Medicare. However, these individuals enjoy bundled plans that give seniors the benefits of hospital insurance (Medicare Part A), medical insurance (Medicare Part B), and sometimes drug coverage (Part D).
Medicare Advantage Plans are very popular because they cover all Medicare services and make life a little easier for seniors who have trouble understanding the nuances of Medicare.
When you contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services to choose your Medicare Advantage Plan, ask your agent about Medicare prescription drug coverage. Unless you already have drug coverage (Part D), you should seriously consider Part D coverage to help reduce costs associated with prescription drugs. You may also want to consider a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan to help fill gaps in coverage that Original Medicare will not cover.
Medicare Advantage Plan Insurance Rules
Medicare works by paying a set amount of money to the companies that offer Medicare Agent in Round Rock, TX. That money is used to pay for the care services that you need. Because Medicare Advantage Plans are different, you should expect out-of-pocket costs to vary depending on the plan you choose.
Different plans have different rules for how you receive services, such as:
If you must go to facilities, suppliers, or doctors that belong to your Advantage Plan for non-urgent and non-emergency care.-
Whether you must get a referral to see a specialized doctor
Companies that offer Medicare Advantage Plans must follow strict rules, which are set by Medicare and can change every year.
Paying for Your Medicare Agent
How much you pay for your Medicare Advantage Plan varies and depends on a few different factors. In most cases, if you need a kind of medical service, you will need to rely on the doctors and providers in your plan's service area and network to pay the lowest amounts. In some cases, if you choose to use a service outside of your plan's network of coverage, you may have to pay out-of-pocket.
We encourage you to contact our office today to learn more about Medicare Advantage Plans, how they work, what your options are, and how often you will have to pay out-of-pocket, if at all.

ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Round Rock officials have approved an updated plan intended to guide the future growth of the city’s trail system.
The updated Round Rock Trails Plan was adopted during a Sept. 10 city council meeting and incorporated into the city’s broader parks and recreation master plan. The plan serves as a roadmap for where future trail connections could be developed across Round Rock.
According to Rick Atkins, director of parks and recreation for the City of Round Rock, the plan is focused on improving connectivity between neighborhoods, schools, parks, retail destinations and other community gathering places.
“This is the guiding force for really how we’re going to grow our network and make sure that it touches everybody and takes this large community and makes it smaller,” Atkins said.
City officials say the update comes as Round Rock continues to grow and demand for its trail system increases. Atkins said the city recorded just under 500,000 trail users on the main section of Heritage Trail last year and expects usage to increase significantly as additional connections are added.
A key concept in the plan is what Adkins calls trail-oriented development, or TROD. The strategy encourages future development around trails to integrate businesses and amenities directly into the trail network.
Adkins said that could include restaurants, coffee shops, retail stores and other destinations that residents could access by walking or biking.
“We want to make sure that the development that happens around our trail system integrates seamlessly into the trail,” Adkins said.
One of the most significant projects associated with the updated plan is the proposed Heritage Trail East connection. The project would extend the trail network along Brushy Creek, linking the existing Heritage Trail near Memorial Park with the existing Brushy Creek Trail on the east side of the city.
Adkins described the project as the “final gap” in the Brushy Creek and Heritage Trail corridor. Once completed, it would create a more continuous east-west route through Round Rock while also paving the way for a future bridge connection into downtown.
Atkins added that the future connection would allow trail users to more easily access destinations such as the library, City Hall, Prete Plaza and downtown businesses.
City leaders expect construction on Heritage Trail East to begin by the end of the year. This project is expected to take about 18 months to complete.

The district’s true average score was a 91, an A. However, per TEA policy, if any campus in a district earns a D or if any campus receives a D in any domain, the highest possible score the district can earn is an 89.
Senior Chief of Schools & Innovation Natalie Nichols said she was extremely proud of the district's success and growth over the previous year.
"That's a lot of hard work to move a system this large," Nichols said. "Our principals and our teachers have really poured their hearts and souls into making sure the kids get what they need."
District scores are made up of three domains—Student Achievement, School Progress and Closing the Gaps. High school and district ratings also take into account graduation rates, as well as college, career and military readiness (CCMR) rates.
CCMR data lags one year behind STAAR scores in accountability ratings. The CCMR rate used in the most recent ratings showed a slight increase to 91.6%, up from 91% the previous year.
All Round Rock ISD campuses received a D or higher for the 2025–26 school year, showing growth over the previous year when two campuses had received an F rating, and three had received a D.
Ratings | 2024–25 | 2025–26 |
A | 27 | 28 |
B | 11 | 14 |
C | 10 | 10 |
D | 3 | 2 |
F | 2 | 0 |
Particular points of pride include the work done by staff and students at Joe Lee Johnson Elementary and Bluebonnet Elementary. Joe Lee Johnson improved to an 80/B, up from a 50/F in 2024–25; Bluebonnet improved to an 88/B, up from a 64/C the previous year.

The Brief
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Williamson County Sheriff's Office is investigating a homicide in Round Rock.
The backstory:
According to the Williamson County Sheriff's Office, on Sept. 7, around 10:58 a.m., deputies responded to the 2400 block of Chandler Creek Blvd. in the park area regarding an injured person.
When deputies arrived, they found the person, who was later determined to be dead.
Dig deeper:
The sheriff's office has determined this to be a homicide investigation.
They are asking for help identifying a suspect. He was described as a black man with short dreadlocks and frosted tips.
The man is believed to be dangerous, the sheriff's office said. If you see this man, do not approach him.
If anyone recognizes the suspect, or has any information, call 911 immediately.
Locals speak out
Local perspective:
"I’m not sure how to wrap my mind around it, it’s still very fresh," says Andrew Anderson, who lives two blocks away from where the homicide was reported.
With the suspect still on the loose, he told FOX 7 he's now staying extra vigilant.
"It puts you a little more on edge than you'd normally be. I've been doing perimeter checks myself and kind of staying up with the neighbors and all the text messages and that sort of thing."
According to Anderson, Chandler Creek Park can be a popular spot for families, who often bring their children to the nearby pool, play sets, and basketball courts.
"You could possibly see, on a normal day, 30 kids rolling through here with their parents every hour or so," he said.
The investigation also unfolded just about 100 yards away from the front doors of Double File Trail Elementary School. While empty for the Labor Day Holiday, one parent, who wished to remain anonymous, says she now has more questions than answers.
"I feel concerned for the students that have to return to school. I'm concerned for the families that live in the area. Is it safe for the people who work in this area to go back to work?"
Her own daughter even expressed her hope of returning to class on Tuesday.
"We play on this blue playground exactly every single day, and then the park is right behind us. I don't want to do this. I don't."

To maintain the effectiveness of Round Rock’s water distribution system, the City of Round Rock will be conducting a temporary disinfectant conversion, switching from its usual disinfectant, chloramine, to free chlorine for approximately one month starting Aug. 3.
“This process will help ensure that we continue to provide safe, high-quality drinking water to every household and business in our community,” said Public Works Executive Director Michael Thane.
The system maintenance is planned to take place Aug. 3 through Sept. 3. During the conversion, residents may notice a temporary change in the taste or smell of their water — some may notice a more “chlorine-like” scent, similar to what’s found in swimming pools. The water will remain safe to drink for people and pets, bathe and to use for plant watering.
The free chlorine conversion will last approximately 30 days. For customers who notice a difference in taste or smell during this time, the water can be stored in an open pitcher and placed in the refrigerator to allow the chlorine to naturally dissipate and become less noticeable. Water filtration systems, such as carbon filters in a water softener or shower head, are effective tools for customers to remove chlorine from the water in their home.
During the free chlorine conversion, Public Works crews will flush water through hydrants in targeted areas of the city to ensure newly treated water reaches all parts of the system. This helps maintain high water quality and clears out any stagnant water, especially near the beginning and end of the month-long conversion.
Hydrant flushing during the conversion can stir up harmless sediments, causing cloudiness or discoloration. If this occurs:
Important Advisory for Specific Groups (dialysis centers, fish and pool owners)
Dialysis providers and hospitals are trained to adjust their treatment processes when disinfectants change. The City has been working to notify local dialysis centers and similarly impacted facilities about the switch to free chlorine.
The water is safe for most pets like cats and dogs. However, if you have fish, amphibians, or other aquatic life, the water must be treated with a dechlorination method or water conditioner before use, just like with chloramines.
Pool or hot tub owners do not need to change maintenance routines. Whether the water uses chloramines or free chlorine, customers should continue maintaining appropriate chlorine levels to prevent algae and bacterial growth.

To protect public health, Texas cities are required to maintain appropriate levels of disinfectants—either free chlorine or chloramines (a combination of chlorine and ammonia)—throughout the entire water distribution system. These disinfectants are critical in eliminating harmful pathogens as water travels from treatment facilities to residents’ taps.
The City of Round Rock previously used free chlorine as its residual disinfectant through the early 2000s, but has since employed chloramine due to its long-lasting stability and lower potential for disinfection byproducts. However, over time, cascading distribution system challenges could occur with the exclusive, extended use of chloramine, especially in warmer months or in systems with complex distribution patterns. To mitigate these concerns and maintain required disinfection throughout the system, a temporary conversion to free chlorine is a recognized industry best practice.
This temporary change helps Round Rock keep its water system clean and reduce the potential for water quality issues by:
In accordance with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) guidelines, the City of Round Rock collects daily water samples from locations throughout the community to verify that chlorine residuals remain at levels sufficient to protect against bacteria throughout the distribution system, while remaining below concentrations that could pose a health risk.
