Trying to pick a health insurance plan can be a chore for anyone. For many people, just mentioning the word "open enrollment" sends shivers down the spine. It seems like there's always a nagging feeling that you're wasting money, choosing a plan with poor in-network care, or both. One would think that health insurance gets easier as you approach retirement age, but the truth is that picking an initial Medicare coverage plan can be daunting.

Unfortunately, the confusing process of signing up for Medicare causes many seniors to forego healthcare coverage altogether. After all, Medicare enrollment can involve several federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration (or SSA) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (or CMS).

At Senior Medicare Insurance Services, our passion is guiding seniors through the confusion of Medicare. That way, they can enjoy retirement with peace of mind knowing they are protected and ready for life after 65. We work with dozens of insurance companies, giving our clients the chance to choose a plan that best fits their lifestyle.

We choose to design our senior insurance plans with a focus on optimal benefits structure, lower costs, and personalized service. Some independent insurance agencies see their aging customers as nothing more than a financial transaction waiting to happen. In contrast, we treat each of our clients with respect and dignity as we help them navigate the confusing waters of Medicare. Combined with individualized service, we help older Americans make well-informed decisions about insurance. What is Medicare?

If you're approaching the golden years of your life, it's important you understand what Medicare is if you don't already.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program reserved for people older than 65 who have worked full-time for at least ten years. The Medicare program is paid for by a combination of worker payroll tax, premiums paid by Medicare enrollees, and the U.S. government.

There are four parts of Medicare:

Senior Medicare Plans Scottsdale, AZ
A

This type of Medicare is free for most U.S. citizens. Medicare Part A helps older adults pay for care in a nursing facility, hospital visits, and some forms of in-home senior care.

B

This tier costs around $100 per month. It covers different outpatient services like lab tests, preventative care, doctor's visits, mental health care, clinical trials, and some forms of surgery.

C

This type of Medicare is most often called Medicare Advantage. This tier of Medicare allows seniors to choose health plans provided by insurance companies like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. Individuals who use Medicare Advantage commonly use Medicare supplement plan insurance to help pay for health care costs that Original Medicare won't cover, like coinsurance, deductibles, and copayments.

D

Sometimes called "PDPs," these plans add drug coverage to standard Medicare, some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS), some Medicare Cost Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans (MSA).

The amount of money you pay for your health care depends on several factors, including:

At Senior Medicare Insurance Services, we offer a number of health insurance solutions for seniors. Two of our most used services include Medicare Advantage plan insurance and Medicare supplement plan insurance.

Senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Scottsdale, AZ

Sometimes called Medigap, the purpose of Medicare Supplement Insurance is to help fill in "gaps" that might not be covered by Original Medicare. You can think of a Medigap policy as a supplement for your Original Medicare benefits.

Private companies like Senior Medicare Insurance Services sell this type of insurance right here in South Carolina. While Original Medicare will pay for much of the cost associated with health care services you need, it may not cover all of your expenses. Generally, Medigap policies do not cover costs stemming from eyeglasses, private-duty nurses, dental care, hearing aids, or long-term care.

Depending on the Medicare Supplement Plan that you choose, it may cover out-of-the-country medical services when you travel abroad. Assuming you have Original Medicare coverage, your policy will cover its share of Medicare-approved health care costs. Once your Original Medicare coverage reaches its limit, your Medigap policy will pay its share of the fees.

Our Medigap policies are drafted to meet your specific needs, and can help cover remaining health care costs such as:

Deductibles

Copayments

Coinsurance

Important Information About Senior Supplement Plan Insurance

To dispel some confusion, you should know that a Medigap policy is not the same as a Medicare Advantage Plan. The latter helps you receive Medicare benefits, while the former supplements the benefits you obtain through your Original Medicare plan. As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:

Medicare Plans Scottsdale, AZ

As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:

  • To qualify for a Medigap policy, you must first have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
  • Payments on your Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan will be made to the private insurance company that you choose, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. These payments are made every month and are paid in addition to the monthly payment you make for Medicare Part B.
  • If you are the holder of a Medicare Advantage Plan, it is illegal for an insurance company to sell you a senior Medicare Supplement Policy. If you plan on switching back to an Original Medicare plan, you may be able to purchase a Medigap policy.
  • If you have health problems as you age, your standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed to be renewable. So long as you pay your monthly premium, your insurance provider cannot cancel your policy.
  • Medigap policies only cover one person. If you have a spouse or family member that would like coverage, they must purchase a separate policy.
  • You may only buy a Senior Medicare Supplement Plan from an insurance agent that is licensed to sell them in your state. Senior Medicare Insurance Services has been licensed to sell Medigap policies in South Carolina for years. We have helped countless seniors get the Medicare coverage they need and continue to do so to this day.
  • In the past, Medigap policies were able to cover costs related to prescription drugs. As of January 1st, 2006, prescription drug coverage is not available on Medicare Supplement Plans. The best way to get coverage for your prescription drugs is to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, often called Part D. Contact our office today to learn more about paying premiums on Medigap and Medicare plans.

For many people, the best time to buy senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Scottsdale, AZ is during the 7 months Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This period starts the day you turn 65 years old, so long as you hold Medical Insurance (Medicare Part B). Generally, during the enrollment period, you get more policy choices and better pricing. Once the enrollment period is over, you may not be able to purchase a Medigap policy. Contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services today to determine if you qualify for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan.

A Medicare Advantage Plan is a kind of Medicare health coverage designed to provide seniors with all their Part A and Part B Medicare benefits. Many Medicare Advantage Plans will often include coverage of the following:

Senior Health Insurance Scottsdale, AZ

In addition, most Medicare Advantage Plans give seniors coverage for their prescription drug needs. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan through Senior Medicare Insurance Services, your Medicare benefits are covered through your plan and will not be paid for by traditional Medicare.

How Medicare Advantage Plans Work

Sometimes called "MA Plans" or "Part C," Medicare Advantage Plans are considered an "all in one" solution to Original Medicare. Senior Medicare Advantage Plans are only offered by private companies that are approved, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. Seniors who enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan are still on Medicare. However, these individuals enjoy bundled plans that give seniors the benefits of hospital insurance (Medicare Part A), medical insurance (Medicare Part B), and sometimes drug coverage (Part D).

Medicare Advantage Plans are very popular because they cover all Medicare services and make life a little easier for seniors who have trouble understanding the nuances of Medicare.

When you contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services to choose your Medicare Advantage Plan, ask your agent about Medicare prescription drug coverage. Unless you already have drug coverage (Part D), you should seriously consider Part D coverage to help reduce costs associated with prescription drugs. You may also want to consider a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan to help fill gaps in coverage that Original Medicare will not cover.

Medicare Advantage Plan Insurance Rules

Medicare works by paying a set amount of money to the companies that offer Medicare Agent in Scottsdale, AZ. That money is used to pay for the care services that you need. Because Medicare Advantage Plans are different, you should expect out-of-pocket costs to vary depending on the plan you choose.

Different plans have different rules for how you receive services, such as:

  • If you must go to facilities, suppliers, or doctors that belong to your Advantage Plan for non-urgent and non-emergency care.
  • Whether you must get a referral to see a specialized doctor
Burial Insurance Scottsdale, AZ

Companies that offer Medicare Advantage Plans must follow strict rules, which are set by Medicare and can change every year.

Paying for Your Medicare Agent

How much you pay for your Medicare Advantage Plan varies and depends on a few different factors. In most cases, if you need a kind of medical service, you will need to rely on the doctors and providers in your plan's service area and network to pay the lowest amounts. In some cases, if you choose to use a service outside of your plan's network of coverage, you may have to pay out-of-pocket.

We encourage you to contact our office today to learn more about Medicare Advantage Plans, how they work, what your options are, and how often you will have to pay out-of-pocket, if at all.

The city of Scottsdale has completed its expanded Fall 2025 paving season, delivering improvements to streets, parking lots and alleys across the community, including a major investment in Old Town as part of the city’s Old Town Revitalization Program.

This year the city made a significant increase in the paving budget. The estimated cost of the 2025 fall paving season was $18.5 million, with $7 million of that amount being spent specifically in Old Town Scottsdale. As a comparison, the estimated cost of the Fall 2024 paving season was approximately $7 million.

Each year, Scottsdale repairs and preserves its asphalt infrastructure to maintain safe, reliable roadways for residents, visitors and businesses. While pavement work occurs year-round, most projects are scheduled in the spring and fall, when temperatures allow materials to cure properly and extend the life of the pavement.

This fall, the paving season was expanded to support targeted improvements in Old Town, one of Scottsdale’s most active and historic areas. The work focused on preserving existing pavement, improving ride quality and extending the lifespan of streets and alleys while minimizing disruption to daily activity.

Scottsdale resurfaced more than 1.5 million square yards of streets and parking lots citywide. The Old Town Pavement Improvement Project accounted for nearly 368,000 square yards of that work, including streets, parking lots and alleys.

Several pavement preservation methods were used during the fall season, each selected based on the condition and needs of the roadway:

Coordinated effort, minimized impacts

Behind the scenes, successful delivery of these projects required collaboration among a cross-departmental team of city staff, alongside 16 contractors and subcontractors to deliver the fall paving program. In Old Town, projects were carefully phased to maintain access to businesses, attractions and neighborhoods while ensuring safe travel for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

Chef Alex Stratta traveled the world, sharing his craft in Pakistan, Singapore, North Carolina, Phoenix and Las Vegas. After decades in hospitality, James Beard-winning chef Alex Stratta thought he was done cooking.

But Stratta heard about Belmont Kitchen & Cocktails’ philosophy. Concurrently, co-founder Phillip Lewkowicz caught wind of his interest.

“When Alex and I first spoke on the phone last June, I immediately realized how aligned we were,” Lewkowicz said. “My entire background has been in fine dining, and obviously Alex has spent his career at the highest levels of fine dining as well. But what we both wanted to create at Belmont was something different — a fun, comfortable, and approachable atmosphere while still bringing very serious food to the table.”

After that first “long phone call,” Lewkowicz was excited to meet him in person.

“Alex came out and cooked for Neal [Lewkowicz’s business partner, Neal Thompson], my wife and me, and we were blown away. He immediately understood what we were building and has helped elevate Belmont’s culinary scene while keeping it approachable, neighborhood-driven and fun,” Lewkowicz said.

In August 2025, Lewkowicz and Thompson spoke with Stratta, who offered his 2 cents. He soon became part of Belmont Kitchen & Cocktails’ executive chef. The restaurant, which opened in February 2025, is Rosewood Concepts’ latest chef-driven dining destination.

Recently, the North Scottsdale eatery introduced The Chef’s Table at Belmont, an exclusive dining experience available to a single table on select evenings. Led by Stratta, the intimate experience features a private, multi-course tasting menu tailored to the guests’ preferences, personal interaction with Stratta, and luxury wine pairings throughout the evening.

The experience is priced at $1,000 per guest, with a minimum party of four, and wine pairings are included. Tax and gratuity are additional. Only one table is available for each select evening, which will be revealed soon.

For Stratta, Belmont represents “the easier, softer way” — a place where he can still cook with precision but also connect with guests, know their names, and not “pull his hair out 24 hours a day.” Lewkowicz is on the floor almost daily, keeping a pulse on the restaurant and ready to “push the pause button” if anything feels off course.

Stratta’s daily menu showcases premium ingredients, seasonal flavors, and thoughtful execution, with a strong emphasis on sourcing from Arizona farms and local producers. Some dishes quickly became signatures: the short rib, the rack of lamb, the tuna tartare and the sea bass that regulars rave about.

The miso-glazed black cod — orange butter sauce, savoy cabbage and peanut sambal ($56) — is a hot commodity. For carnivores, there’s the 8-ounce Argentine filet mignon ($68) and 8-ounce American Wagyu New York strip ($55). The roasted beet and pineapple salad is a nutty delight with goat cheese, toasted pistachio and aged balsamico ($19).

A creative twist is the porcini mushroom cigars, truffle pecorino, wilted spinach, roasted chicken jus and wild mushrooms ($23).

“There are a lot of items from what I call our ‘core menu’ that fit the mold perfectly with what we’re trying to do,” he said. “We’re very, very conscientious of the guest experience. My experience hasn’t made me stubborn. It’s made me much more flexible. I can navigate whether someone wants to do fancy stuff or a taco night. We can do it well. I think that’s what Phil and I have agreed on. That seems to be the pulse for this restaurant: being flexible.”

Happy hour has been a hit, with guest favorites Mishima Wagyu burger ($24), quesabirra tacos ($22) and Spritz Decision ($15).

“That was the part that really inspired me to come with Phil,” said Stratta, a colon cancer survivor. “I watched the place fill up at 3 o’clock and it was August. The place was full. It’s 4 o’clock. It’s 100 degrees outside. There were 60 people at the bar and I thought, ‘Oh my gosh. That was for me. There’s something going on here.’

“And super night, there was definitely a spark.”

Stratta brought classical French and Italian technique, structure, and a sense of purpose. He refined the kitchen’s foundation, clarified the restaurant’s culinary identity, and helped define Belmont as a luxury neighborhood restaurant — a place where a sea bass with stewed peppers and crispy potatoes feels as natural as a Wagyu burger at happy hour.

“I’ve been fortunate,” he said. “I had my own two-star Michelin restaurant, Alex, for five years at the Wynn Las Vegas,” he said.

“I know what it takes. I know what we want. I know how to do it and what is necessary. I could do most of this stuff pretty much on the fly because it’s about repetition and practice. A lot of these dishes I’ve been doing for 30 years. People still go, ‘Oh my god. This is the best shirt rib.’ I say, ‘That’s the same one we did in 1992.’ It’s that easy.”

Chef Matt Carter to Open Dash in Scottsdale This Fall

Chef Matt Carter and business partner Brian Raab are preparing to open Dash, a new all-day restaurant and retail market coming to Scottsdale this fall. Chef Matt Carter and business partner Brian Raab are preparing to open Dash, a new all-day restaurant and retail market coming to Scottsdale this fall. The concept from Broken Plate Hospitality will serve coffee, pastries, sandwiches, Roman-style pizza, charcoal chicken, soft-serve ice cream, and other rotating dishes alongside a market stocked with prepared foods and pantry staples.

Slated to open near Hayden Road and Mountain View Road, Dash marks Broken Plate Hospitality’s first new concept in a decade. Carter and Raab formed their partnership in 2008 to open the first location of The Mission in Old Town Scottsdale. Broken Plate Hospitality has since grown to include Zinc Bistro, a French-inspired restaurant; The Mission, focused on modern Latin cuisine; and Fat Ox, which draws from regional Italian cooking.

“This is our most approachable concept to date, giving us total freedom to adapt to the mood, moment, and daypart,” says Raab, in a press release. “I can do tequila shots with you at The Mission and pour Negronis at Fat Ox, but Dash is the ultimate neighborhood hang to grab a morning coffee, catch up over lunch, or share a bottle of wine at sunset and then take one home with you.”

A Neighborhood Concept Years in the Making

Dash is built around the idea of “Dash in, dash out, morning, noon, and night,” with service designed to accommodate everything from morning coffee runs to leisurely evening meals. Carter, an Arizona Culinary Hall of Fame chef, has lived in McCormick Ranch for 17 years and developed the restaurant with the surrounding neighborhood in mind. Carter is joined in the kitchen by longtime Fat Ox pastry chef Lisa Graf, who will help develop the concept’s pastry program.

“I’ve been dreaming of this concept for ten years, driving past this exact space several times a week wishing our community had a real neighborhood joint,” says Carter, in a press release. “Dash is a culmination of my personal culinary passions, and things I’ve wanted to do but haven’t fit at our other restaurants like sandwich-making, Roman pizza, charcoal chicken, soft-serve, pizza pasta, all paired with Lisa’s incredible talent in the pastry kitchen. It’s an effortless neighborhood gathering place built around food people actually crave and want to eat every single day.”

What’s on the Menu at Dash

Dash will begin each day with gourmet coffee and freshly baked pastries, with premium sandwiches among the offerings planned throughout the day. The culinary program will expand to include Roman-style pizzas, charcoal chicken, soft-serve ice cream, and daily specials determined by the culinary team.

The beverage program will similarly shift throughout the day. Morning offerings will include craft coffee and mimosas, while evenings will bring rotating wines and batched cocktails designed for sharing.

Dash will also operate as a neighborhood retail market. Shoppers will be able to purchase signature items associated with Carter’s other concepts, including mac and cheese, chips and guacamole, and artisanal hand-shaped pastas to enjoy at home.

An Indoor-Outdoor Scottsdale Gathering Place

The physical space is designed to change along with its menu throughout the day, transitioning from a morning bake shop into a candlelit evening setting.

Inside, Dash will have seating for 12 and a custom vintage-style audiophile speaker system. A larger, west-facing patio will accommodate approximately 40 guests and take advantage of Arizona’s evening sunsets.

The Scottsdale restaurant will also cater to customers looking for quicker service. A dedicated curbside pickup area will support digital orders, complementing the market component and the concept’s emphasis on convenient neighborhood dining.
