One would think that health insurance gets easier as you approach retirement age, but the truth is that picking an initial Medicare coverage plan can be daunting.

Unfortunately, the confusing process of signing up for Medicare causes many seniors to forego healthcare coverage altogether. After all, Medicare enrollment can involve several federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration (or SSA) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (or CMS).

That way, they can enjoy retirement with peace of mind knowing they are protected and ready for life after 65. What is Medicare?

If you're approaching the golden years of your life, it's important you understand what Medicare is if you don't already.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program reserved for people older than 65 who have worked full-time for at least ten years. The Medicare program is paid for by a combination of worker payroll tax, premiums paid by Medicare enrollees, and the U.S. government.

There are four parts of Medicare:

Senior Medicare Plans Surprise, AZ
A

This type of Medicare is free for most U.S. citizens. Medicare Part A helps older adults pay for care in a nursing facility, hospital visits, and some forms of in-home senior care.

B

This tier costs around $100 per month. It covers different outpatient services like lab tests, preventative care, doctor's visits, mental health care, clinical trials, and some forms of surgery.

C

This type of Medicare is most often called Medicare Advantage. This tier of Medicare allows seniors to choose health plans provided by insurance companies like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. Individuals who use Medicare Advantage commonly use Medicare supplement plan insurance to help pay for health care costs that Original Medicare won't cover, like coinsurance, deductibles, and copayments.

D

Sometimes called "PDPs," these plans add drug coverage to standard Medicare, some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS), some Medicare Cost Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans (MSA).

The amount of money you pay for your health care depends on several factors, including:

At Senior Medicare Insurance Services, we offer a number of health insurance solutions for seniors. Two of our most used services include Medicare Advantage plan insurance and Medicare supplement plan insurance.

Senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Surprise, AZ

Sometimes called Medigap, the purpose of Medicare Supplement Insurance is to help fill in "gaps" that might not be covered by Original Medicare. You can think of a Medigap policy as a supplement for your Original Medicare benefits.

Private companies like Senior Medicare Insurance Services sell this type of insurance right here in South Carolina. While Original Medicare will pay for much of the cost associated with health care services you need, it may not cover all of your expenses. Generally, Medigap policies do not cover costs stemming from eyeglasses, private-duty nurses, dental care, hearing aids, or long-term care.

Depending on the Medicare Supplement Plan that you choose, it may cover out-of-the-country medical services when you travel abroad. Assuming you have Original Medicare coverage, your policy will cover its share of Medicare-approved health care costs. Once your Original Medicare coverage reaches its limit, your Medigap policy will pay its share of the fees.

Our Medigap policies are drafted to meet your specific needs, and can help cover remaining health care costs such as:

Deductibles

Copayments

Coinsurance

Important Information About Senior Supplement Plan Insurance

To dispel some confusion, you should know that a Medigap policy is not the same as a Medicare Advantage Plan. The latter helps you receive Medicare benefits, while the former supplements the benefits you obtain through your Original Medicare plan. As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:

Medicare Plans Surprise, AZ

As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:

  • To qualify for a Medigap policy, you must first have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
  • Payments on your Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan will be made to the private insurance company that you choose, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. These payments are made every month and are paid in addition to the monthly payment you make for Medicare Part B.
  • If you are the holder of a Medicare Advantage Plan, it is illegal for an insurance company to sell you a senior Medicare Supplement Policy. If you plan on switching back to an Original Medicare plan, you may be able to purchase a Medigap policy.
  • If you have health problems as you age, your standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed to be renewable. So long as you pay your monthly premium, your insurance provider cannot cancel your policy.
  • Medigap policies only cover one person. If you have a spouse or family member that would like coverage, they must purchase a separate policy.
  • You may only buy a Senior Medicare Supplement Plan from an insurance agent that is licensed to sell them in your state. Senior Medicare Insurance Services has been licensed to sell Medigap policies in South Carolina for years. We have helped countless seniors get the Medicare coverage they need and continue to do so to this day.
  • In the past, Medigap policies were able to cover costs related to prescription drugs. As of January 1st, 2006, prescription drug coverage is not available on Medicare Supplement Plans. The best way to get coverage for your prescription drugs is to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, often called Part D. Contact our office today to learn more about paying premiums on Medigap and Medicare plans.

For many people, the best time to buy senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Surprise, AZ is during the 7 months Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This period starts the day you turn 65 years old, so long as you hold Medical Insurance (Medicare Part B). Generally, during the enrollment period, you get more policy choices and better pricing. Once the enrollment period is over, you may not be able to purchase a Medigap policy. Contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services today to determine if you qualify for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan.

A Medicare Advantage Plan is a kind of Medicare health coverage designed to provide seniors with all their Part A and Part B Medicare benefits. Many Medicare Advantage Plans will often include coverage of the following:

Senior Health Insurance Surprise, AZ

In addition, most Medicare Advantage Plans give seniors coverage for their prescription drug needs. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan through Senior Medicare Insurance Services, your Medicare benefits are covered through your plan and will not be paid for by traditional Medicare.

How Medicare Advantage Plans Work

Sometimes called "MA Plans" or "Part C," Medicare Advantage Plans are considered an "all in one" solution to Original Medicare. Senior Medicare Advantage Plans are only offered by private companies that are approved, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. Seniors who enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan are still on Medicare. However, these individuals enjoy bundled plans that give seniors the benefits of hospital insurance (Medicare Part A), medical insurance (Medicare Part B), and sometimes drug coverage (Part D).

Medicare Advantage Plans are very popular because they cover all Medicare services and make life a little easier for seniors who have trouble understanding the nuances of Medicare.

When you contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services to choose your Medicare Advantage Plan, ask your agent about Medicare prescription drug coverage. Unless you already have drug coverage (Part D), you should seriously consider Part D coverage to help reduce costs associated with prescription drugs. You may also want to consider a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan to help fill gaps in coverage that Original Medicare will not cover.

Medicare Advantage Plan Insurance Rules

  • Whether you must get a referral to see a specialized doctor

Paying for Your Medicare Agent

We encourage you to contact our office today to learn more about Medicare Advantage Plans, how they work, what your options are, and how often you will have to pay out-of-pocket, if at all.

SURPRISE, AZ — As Surprise continues to add new neighborhoods, businesses, and residents, the city's code enforcement division is busier than it has been in years.

New city data show code enforcement activity reached a five-year high in fiscal year 2026, with approximately 6,200 cases opened and 6,200 cases resolved, according to city officials.

Officials say the increase is largely tied to the city's rapid growth.

“Obviously, as we continue to grow, we have more rooftops to inspect, more neighborhoods, more commercial areas,” said Mindy Davis, Surprise's community development director.

The cases cover a wide range of violations, but city staff says most involve property maintenance issues and zoning-related concerns.

One issue is graffiti.

Near Bell Road and El Mirage Road, city crews recently worked to remove graffiti from public areas. While officials say Surprise does not experience the same level of graffiti as some larger cities, they consider quick response important.

“Graffiti isn't a huge issue here in Surprise, but it is very important that when an area is tagged, that we have a quick response,” Davis said.

According to the city, staff proactively identify most code enforcement cases. However, residents continue to play a major role in reporting problems. About 30% of cases originate from community complaints.

The heightened enforcement activity is noticeable in parts of the city that have undergone recent cleanup and revitalization efforts.

Resident Patricia Rutledge said she has seen improvements in and around Surprise's Original Town Site area.

“They've really cleaned up the park area, they put in a whole new playground in, they opened up the recreational center, which is nice,” Rutledge said.

The city also recently completed cleanup projects that removed approximately 10 tons of trash and 83 discarded tires from areas around the Original Town Site.

“It was...pretty dirty, I guess,” Rutledge said.

While some residents view code enforcement as a quality-of-life issue, city officials argue the work also has a public safety component.

Davis said addressing neglected properties and other nuisance conditions can help prevent larger problems from developing.

“When there is excess blight, blight invites crimes,” Davis said. “So code enforcement, in my opinion, they do have a very important role in the city.”

As Surprise continues to expand, officials expect code enforcement activity to remain elevated.

The city has experienced significant residential and commercial growth in recent years, particularly in northwest Surprise, where thousands of new homes and businesses are planned or under construction.

With that growth comes additional responsibility for inspectors monitoring neighborhoods, commercial centers, and undeveloped properties.

The Kansas City Royals wasted no time making changes as the offseason is officially underway. The team's first move was not related to a player, but rather a coach who has been on the hot seat for some time.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported Tuesday that Royals hitting coach Alec Zumwalt was reassigned within the organization. He will remain senior director of hitting performance, the role he held before joining the major league staff in May 2022.

It has been no secret that the past two seasons have not been the best offensively for Kansas City. In 2025, the Royals scored the fifth-fewest runs in baseball, followed by the ninth-fewest this season. Zumwalt has been at the center of discussions surrounding the team's offensive struggles over the past two years, and now Kansas City has decided to make a change.

Zumwalt has been involved with the Royals for quite some time, joining the organization as a scout in 2013. Over the years, he worked his way up through the organization, and in early 2022, he replaced Terry Bradshaw as the team's hitting coach.

Now, Zumwalt will be replaced as the Royals' hitting coach. There is clear room for improvement when it comes to Kansas City's offense, particularly in run production and situational hitting. The Royals' decision to make this move so early in the offseason comes as the team looks to improve offensively.

It will be interesting to see who takes Zumwalt's place as the Royals' hitting coach in 2027. The offseason moves have started early for Kansas City, with plenty of work to be done before the upcoming season.

SURPRISE, AZ — A new $27 million facility designed to streamline access to social services, health programs and community resources is now open in Surprise, with city leaders and residents celebrating what they hope will become a central hub for the growing West Valley.

The 35,000-square-foot Surprise Community and Resource Center officially opened this week, marking the completion of a project years in the making.

Located near Grand Avenue and Greenway Road on what was once the original town site of Surprise, the facility consolidates a wide range of programs and services that were previously offered in separate locations.

For some residents touring the new building, the practical details stood out right away.

“They have a lot of different bathrooms, which is ... those are always good ... good to have,” said Surprise resident Edward Haire Jr.

The center houses health and wellness programs, Head Start classrooms, workforce development services, housing and homelessness assistance, after-school youth programs, and resources for veterans and seniors.

City leaders say the goal is to make those services easier to find and access.

“All these services exist, right?” said Surprise City Councilman Johnny Melton. “But they're not always ... it's hard to find sometimes.”

Residents who live nearby say the centralized location is a major benefit.

“I do live nearby, and it's pretty much within walking distance, which is nice,” one resident said.

The project traces its origins back four years, when the Surprise City Council approved an intergovernmental agreement with Maricopa County to construct the facility.

Funding came from multiple sources. Maricopa County allocated $18 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act funding for the project, while the city contributed approximately $9 million through a combination of federal and municipal funding sources.

In addition, grocery chain Sprouts donated $450,000 to support community wellness and nutrition programs offered through the center.

Maricopa County officials say the facility is expected to serve residents beyond Surprise city limits.

“It's great for the whole community, not just the City of Surprise, but the surrounding communities as well,” said Vice Chair Debbie Lesko of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

The opening also serves as a reminder of how dramatically Surprise has changed over the past several decades.

Longtime resident John Rosales remembers a much smaller city.

“When we moved in, it was only one square mile,” Rosales said. “Bell Road, Greenway, El Mirage and Dysart ... in that area.”
