Trying to pick a health insurance plan can be a chore for anyone. For many people, just mentioning the word "open enrollment" sends shivers down the spine. It seems like there's always a nagging feeling that you're wasting money, choosing a plan with poor in-network care, or both. One would think that health insurance gets easier as you approach retirement age, but the truth is that picking an initial Medicare coverage plan can be daunting.
Unfortunately, the confusing process of signing up for Medicare causes many seniors to forego healthcare coverage altogether. After all, Medicare enrollment can involve several federal agencies, including the Social Security Administration (or SSA) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (or CMS).
At Senior Medicare Insurance Services, our passion is guiding seniors through the confusion of Medicare. That way, they can enjoy retirement with peace of mind knowing they are protected and ready for life after 65. We work with dozens of insurance companies, giving our clients the chance to choose a plan that best fits their lifestyle.
We choose to design our senior insurance plans with a focus on optimal benefits structure, lower costs, and personalized service. Some independent insurance agencies see their aging customers as nothing more than a financial transaction waiting to happen. In contrast, we treat each of our clients with respect and dignity as we help them navigate the confusing waters of Medicare. Combined with individualized service, we help older Americans make well-informed decisions about insurance. Whether you're in need of senior Medicare Supplement Plan insurance in Tempe, AZ or simply have questions about signing up for Medicare, our team is here to help.

What is Medicare?
If you're approaching the golden years of your life, it's important you understand what Medicare is if you don't already.
Medicare is a federal health insurance program reserved for people older than 65 who have worked full-time for at least ten years. The Medicare program is paid for by a combination of worker payroll tax, premiums paid by Medicare enrollees, and the U.S. government.
There are four parts of Medicare:

The amount of money you pay for your health care depends on several factors, including:
- What kind of care you need, and how often it is needed.
- The type of Medicare coverage you choose.
- Whether there are alternative insurance policies that will help fill gaps in your coverage
- Whether a doctor agrees to charge you the same amount that Medicare will cover for a medical service
At Senior Medicare Insurance Services, we offer a number of health insurance solutions for seniors. Two of our most used services include Medicare Advantage plan insurance and Medicare supplement plan insurance.
Senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Tempe, AZ
Sometimes called Medigap, the purpose of Medicare Supplement Insurance is to help fill in "gaps" that might not be covered by Original Medicare. You can think of a Medigap policy as a supplement for your Original Medicare benefits.
Private companies like Senior Medicare Insurance Services sell this type of insurance right here in South Carolina. While Original Medicare will pay for much of the cost associated with health care services you need, it may not cover all of your expenses. Generally, Medigap policies do not cover costs stemming from eyeglasses, private-duty nurses, dental care, hearing aids, or long-term care.
Depending on the Medicare Supplement Plan that you choose, it may cover out-of-the-country medical services when you travel abroad. Assuming you have Original Medicare coverage, your policy will cover its share of Medicare-approved health care costs. Once your Original Medicare coverage reaches its limit, your Medigap policy will pay its share of the fees.
Our Medigap policies are drafted to meet your specific needs, and can help cover remaining health care costs such as:
Deductibles
Copayments
Coinsurance
Important Information About Senior Supplement Plan Insurance
To dispel some confusion, you should know that a Medigap policy is not the same as a Medicare Advantage Plan. The latter helps you receive Medicare benefits, while the former supplements the benefits you obtain through your Original Medicare plan. As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:
As you begin to explore Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans, keep the following important information in mind:
- To qualify for a Medigap policy, you must first have Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
- Payments on your Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan will be made to the private insurance company that you choose, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. These payments are made every month and are paid in addition to the monthly payment you make for Medicare Part B.
- If you are the holder of a Medicare Advantage Plan, it is illegal for an insurance company to sell you a senior Medicare Supplement Policy. If you plan on switching back to an Original Medicare plan, you may be able to purchase a Medigap policy.
- If you have health problems as you age, your standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed to be renewable. So long as you pay your monthly premium, your insurance provider cannot cancel your policy.
- Medigap policies only cover one person. If you have a spouse or family member that would like coverage, they must purchase a separate policy.
- You may only buy a Senior Medicare Supplement Plan from an insurance agent that is licensed to sell them in your state. Senior Medicare Insurance Services has been licensed to sell Medigap policies in South Carolina for years. We have helped countless seniors get the Medicare coverage they need and continue to do so to this day.
- In the past, Medigap policies were able to cover costs related to prescription drugs. As of January 1st, 2006, prescription drug coverage is not available on Medicare Supplement Plans. The best way to get coverage for your prescription drugs is to join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan, often called Part D. Contact our office today to learn more about paying premiums on Medigap and Medicare plans.
For many people, the best time to buy senior Medicare Supplement Plan Insurance in Tempe, AZ is during the 7 months Medigap Open Enrollment Period. This period starts the day you turn 65 years old, so long as you hold Medical Insurance (Medicare Part B). Generally, during the enrollment period, you get more policy choices and better pricing. Once the enrollment period is over, you may not be able to purchase a Medigap policy. Contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services today to determine if you qualify for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan.
Medicare Agent in Tempe, AZ
A Medicare Advantage Plan is a kind of Medicare health coverage designed to provide seniors with all their Part A and Part B Medicare benefits. Many Medicare Advantage Plans will often include coverage of the following:
- Preferred Provider Organizations
- Special Needs Plans
- Private Fee-for-Service
- Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans
- Health Maintenance Organizations
In addition, most Medicare Advantage Plans give seniors coverage for their prescription drug needs. When you enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan through Senior Medicare Insurance Services, your Medicare benefits are covered through your plan and will not be paid for by traditional Medicare.
How Medicare Advantage Plans Work
Sometimes called "MA Plans" or "Part C," Medicare Advantage Plans are considered an "all in one" solution to Original Medicare. Senior Medicare Advantage Plans are only offered by private companies that are approved, like Senior Medicare Insurance Services. Seniors who enroll in a Medicare Advantage Plan are still on Medicare. However, these individuals enjoy bundled plans that give seniors the benefits of hospital insurance (Medicare Part A), medical insurance (Medicare Part B), and sometimes drug coverage (Part D).
Medicare Advantage Plans are very popular because they cover all Medicare services and make life a little easier for seniors who have trouble understanding the nuances of Medicare.
When you contact Senior Medicare Insurance Services to choose your Medicare Advantage Plan, ask your agent about Medicare prescription drug coverage. Unless you already have drug coverage (Part D), you should seriously consider Part D coverage to help reduce costs associated with prescription drugs. You may also want to consider a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan to help fill gaps in coverage that Original Medicare will not cover.
Medicare Advantage Plan Insurance Rules
Medicare works by paying a set amount of money to the companies that offer Medicare Agent in Tempe, AZ. That money is used to pay for the care services that you need. Because Medicare Advantage Plans are different, you should expect out-of-pocket costs to vary depending on the plan you choose.
Different plans have different rules for how you receive services, such as:
If you must go to facilities, suppliers, or doctors that belong to your Advantage Plan for non-urgent and non-emergency care.-
Whether you must get a referral to see a specialized doctor
Companies that offer Medicare Advantage Plans must follow strict rules, which are set by Medicare and can change every year.
Paying for Your Medicare Agent
How much you pay for your Medicare Advantage Plan varies and depends on a few different factors. In most cases, if you need a kind of medical service, you will need to rely on the doctors and providers in your plan's service area and network to pay the lowest amounts. In some cases, if you choose to use a service outside of your plan's network of coverage, you may have to pay out-of-pocket.
We encourage you to contact our office today to learn more about Medicare Advantage Plans, how they work, what your options are, and how often you will have to pay out-of-pocket, if at all.

City of Tempe urges storm preparedness 9 months after destructive microburst

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — Nine months have passed since a powerful microburst tore through Tempe, toppling hundreds of trees and damaging homes and businesses, and some areas are still recovering.
With monsoon storms in store across the Valley this week, city officials say that last year’s storm has renewed the focus on preparedness, particularly in neighborhoods and business areas still recovering.
Tempe Emergency Manager Monique Rodriguez said the microburst was a reminder of how quickly conditions can change in the Valley.
“Going through a disaster like that, I think, opened everybody’s eyes to what can happen here,” Rodriguez explained. “We aren’t expecting storms like hurricanes and those types of things. But, having seen it happen here in the Valley, I think that did cause people to be more alert and keep their eye on the weather.”
City officials are encouraging residents to prepare now by building emergency kits, picking up free sandbags if their home is prone to flooding, and securing loose outdoor items such as pool umbrellas and patio furniture.
The City of Tempe has sand and bags available at two locations. Bags are available before a major storm on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents can pick up sandbags at:
Both locations are open daily, 24 hours.
Rodriguez also recommends trimming back vegetation ahead of strong winds to help prevent branches from landing on roofs and causing additional damage, and fixing low spots that collect water to reduce flooding risk.
City officials also stress keeping insurance information updated and easy to access.
“One thing we saw during the microburst is that people that had their insurance information on hand and organized had an easier process going through the insurance recovery process,” Rodriguez explained. “So, we recommend that people have their insurance paperwork together. You know what your coverage is, and you know who you can contact if you do receive damage.”
The Oct. 2025 microburst damaged or destroyed more than 1,200 homes and buildings, according to city data. Officials said more than 500 trees were lost, and crews collected about 1,500 tons of debris. Tempe Mayor Corey Woods issued an emergency declaration to help with clean-up efforts.
As recovery continues in parts of Tempe, city officials say residents should be ready, have a plan, and make sure insurance paperwork is up to date and easy to find if storms cause damage again.

Three Internal Candidates to Solve One of the Angels Biggest Needs

For years, the Los Angeles Angels have tried (and largely failed) to patch their volatile bullpen unpredictable veteran free agents, generally shopping in the bargain bin. But as the front offices shifts toward young, cost effective power arms, the remedy for Anaheim's late inning woes might already be wearing a Halos uniform.
The Angels need both quantity and quality in the bullpen. And with plenty of roster holes to fill, it would be best to find some quality arms internally then spend wisely on a proven anchor for the bullpen for 2027. That would both improve the team in the near term and give the young arms a veteran to guide them through their early careers.
If the Angels decide to look internally, here are the best bets to help solve their relief pitching problem.
Nicolò Pinazzi: The Italian Strikeout Machine
Which relief pitcher had the longest scoreless streak in organized baseball this season? That would be Nicolo Pinazzi of the Rocket City Trash Pandas. A major contributor to the Southern League championship team's bullpen which was rated at the top of minor league baseball, Pinazzi has both an incredible back story and a wicked heater.
Originally from Italy, Pinazzi made his way to the states and was at one time in the Reds organization. They released him and he pitched in independent ball before catching on with the Angels. And this year he has been quite the story throughout baseball.
During his breakout campaign with the Rocket City Trash Pandas and affiliated levels, he registered an astonishing 0.84 ERA and struck out over 100 batters in 64 innings while going over 30 consecutive outings without surrendering an earned run. At six foot two the southpaw gets great extension and whips the ball towards the plate in the mid 90s with cutting action and mixes in a quality slider and developing curve ball. He struck out 38.9% of the batters he faced this season.
With any improvement on his secondary offerings, Pinazzi will be dominant reliever. If not, his fastball/slider combination could see him land a middle relief role as early as next season.
Chase Shores: Unleashing Triple-Digit Velocity
The candidate most likely to one day be a closer, 2025 second round pick Chase Shores recorded the final out in that year's College World Series for LSU. Already equipped with a 100 mile per hour fastball, Shores has been trying to improve his fading change up enough to stick as a starting pitcher.
Shores was drafted by Perry Minasian who loved to take relievers and try to turn them into starters. This is a plan that has failed almost every time. Austin Gordon is the one exception and his Major League future is still a mystery. Under a new front office, every prospect will be reevaluated and it is quite likely the Angels new brass sees Shores the same way prospect evaluators did: as a closer.
Between Shores 60 grade fastball, 55 grade slider, and 50 grade comand he has the look of an arm that could be fast tracked to the big club if the Angels decide to go that route. If there is one relief arm in the organization to really dream on, Shores is it. Getting a pitcher with his talent into the team's pitching lab and pairing him with the new pitching coaches and analytics could really net the Angels a quality back of the bullpen arm.
Camden Minacci: The Pure College Reliever Pedigree
Yet another college closer drafted by the previous regime, Minacci closed at ACC powerhouse Wake Forest and was selected in the 6th round of the 2023 draft. He teamed with Pinazzi on the Trash Pandas championship team and has always profiled as a high strikeout reliever.
Under the tutelage of Tim Leveque, the 24 year old righty saw a major improvement in 2026. He shaved his ERA over a full run to 3.59 and his WHIP down to 1.280. Striking out 61 batters in only 47.2 innings was great but his 21 walks over that frame is still a little too high.
Unlike the others, Minacci's best offering is a 60 grade slider that he uses to set up his mid 90s fastball. Heading into this season control was his biggest obstacle and while that has improved, he still has some work to do.
But with Leveque now coaching the Angels big league club and Minacci clearly trending in the right direction, expect him to get an invitation to Major League Spring Training with an outside chance to earn a job out of camp. There will be jobs available and Minacci has the raw stuff and obvious coachability to potentially land one.

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — For over four decades, Casa Reynoso has served traditional Mexican fare in the Valley, but a single social media video recently transformed the multi-generational establishment into an overnight viral sensation.
The restaurant’s culinary lineage stretches back to 1938 in the mining community of Globe-Miami, Arizona, when owner Joanne Reynoso’s great-aunt opened the El Rey Cafe following work during the Great Depression.
By 1946, Reynoso’s grandmother, Nana Salustia, launched her own location in downtown Globe. Over the decades, the family has operated roughly 20 restaurants, food trucks and ventures across the state, with about 12 still running today.
“Our inheritance is really the recipes for this food, and that’s what carries us to this day,” Reynoso said.
Cooking for Senators in the Capitol
The family’s culinary footprint reached as far as Washington, D.C., where they once catered inside the Capitol kitchen for Arizona Sens. John McCain and Dennis DeConcini.
“I was young at the time and didn’t fully grasp the magnitude of it until I talk about it now,” Reynoso recalled. “We even had to teach the Senators how to peel the husk off a tamale instead of trying to eat it whole.”
The restaurant’s signature Globe-Miami style incorporates distinct copper accents honoring the mining roots of its founders, who started with a $100 revolving credit line at a local grocery store. Casa Reynoso sources its green chiles directly from Hatch, New Mexico, typically keeping a walk-in freezer stocked with enough chiles to last an entire year.
This year, however, that supply ran dry by June.
The Mother’s Day video that changed everything
The sudden surge in demand came courtesy of local sports content creator Nathan Kropp, known online as Mr. AZ Sports.
Kropp visited Casa Reynoso on Mother’s Day with a friend to film a quick review. He anticipated a modest reception of roughly 100,000 views on Instagram. Instead, the video exploded from 96,000 views to more than 2 million within 24 hours.
“When I woke up, it had jumped from 96,000 to 2 million views,” Kropp said. “I remember thinking, what did I just do? But this is awesome.”
Reynoso and her staff had no idea Kropp was even filming during a busy holiday rush until the video took off the following day.
Beating the brutal summer slump
Summer in the Phoenix metro area is notoriously difficult for independent dining spots, as extreme triple-digit heat often keeps patrons indoors. But the viral momentum kept lines wrapped around Casa Reynoso all season long.
“July is usually our slowest month, but this year was completely crazy,” Reynoso said.
For Kropp and Reynoso, the phenomenon highlights how social media platforms have effectively replaced traditional word-of-mouth recommendations, offering independent and historic restaurants a modern lifeline.
“My dad always told us, ‘This is our livelihood. Take care of it,’” Reynoso said. “Both of my parents were born in Mexico. My dad had a dream, he fulfilled that dream, and every day we are working to keep it alive.”

TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — Health officials are warning shoppers about possible measles exposures in both the East and West valleys.
The Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) says seven residents have tested positive for measles, and some visited local businesses while potentially contagious.
Officials say possible exposures occurred at the following locations:
| Location | Address | Date | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tempe Marketplace | 2000 E. Rio Salado Pkwy, Tempe | July 6 | 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. |
| Walmart | 13770 W. Bell Rd., Surprise | July 12 | 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. |
Anyone who visited these locations should watch for symptoms, which typically appear seven to 12 days after being exposed.
In some cases, symptoms may take up to 21 days to show up. Health officials say the virus can survive in the air for up to two hours.
Symptoms can include:
A spreading problem
Measles is highly contagious, and Maricopa County has reported far more cases than usual this year.
The latest infections bring the county’s total to 21 confirmed cases so far in 2026. It’s a stark increase from the average of about one case per year over the past 30 years.
It’s also beyond the Valley.
An additional measles case was reported in Yavapai County on Thursday, and the virus was also recently detected in a wastewater treatment facility in Sedona.

Officials say measles is preventable with two doses of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, typically given during childhood. Adults need at least one dose of MMR vaccine given after age 1.
MCDPH says about 90% of unvaccinated people who are exposed will become infected.
There is no specific treatment for measles, and the illness can lead to serious complications. In rare cases, long-term effects can include subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, a progressive brain disorder that may not appear until years after the initial infection.
If you develop symptoms, officials recommend staying home and calling your health care provider for guidance.
More information on measles, including possible complications, can be found on MCDPH‘s website.
