VALDOSTA, Ga. – Crossing the state line to attend Valdosta State University (VSU) was an easy decision for senior David Cooper, a musical theatre major from Jacksonville, Florida.
Cooper planned to attend an in-state university and play soccer, but he fell in love with performing on stage. When he asked his high school teacher to recommend a school with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre, she told him about VSU. A campus visit and tour with his dad, and Cooper was hooked.
We asked him how he knew VSU was the right choice, the secret to getting involved on campus, and how he secured in-state tuition to attend VSU?
Why did you decide to come to school at VSU?
I decided to come here for multiple reasons: it was close to home and my mom was very sick during my senior year of high school, so I wanted her to be able to still watch me perform with as little travel as possible. I also came here because when my dad and I decided to randomly take a tour of the school and meet with the heads of the Theatre department, we looked at each other and said this felt like home. I felt connected with the people here already, and the faculty immediately treated me like one of their own.
How did you learn about the Border State Tuition Waiver, which allow students in states surrounding Georgia, like Florida, to apply for in-state tuition at VSU?
I learned about the Border State Tuition Waiver through my advisor. She told me that I was eligible for Border State Tuition Waiver since I’m from Jacksonville. It has blessed me and my family having the waiver. With two other sons in colleges like FSU and UCF, it really helps out more than people would ever think.
Why did you decide to study theatre?
I decided to do theatre, because it’s an environment where everyone comes from different backgrounds, different stories, and different styles of acting. When I’m acting onstage, I get to become someone else who isn’t me. For about two hours, I forget about all my stresses and worries of that day, perform, and completely forget about them when I’m done. It brings people joy; it can make you cry and laugh all at the same time. It’s my passion because I’m human. And I believe it’s the truest human art form to witness.
What have you enjoyed most about the theatre department and the College of the Arts at VSU?
What I have enjoyed most about the College of Arts is how welcoming everyone is. The faculty are there to push you until you succeed, because that’s all they want for you. They understand what it was once like in our shoes, and the thing I love most is that they will make sure you graduate as the best version of yourself.
Which plays are you most excited for this academic year?
I am most excited about all of the productions. We have “Boeing-Boeing” (which I’m in by the way) which will be a hilarious show that you do not want to miss! After that, we have “Resonance: The Dance Concert” which will have the most spectacular pieces choreographed by our faculty and our students. “For The Love” is a beautiful show with a great message and amazing performers. “A Christmas Carol” is a classic that you can’t miss. Next semester, we have “A Chorus Line” and “Much Ado About Nothing” which will both make you want to come back again and again each night.
You are very involved on campus. How did you start that process?
I got involved through connecting with people who were older than me. I started by joining my fraternity, Delta Chi, which has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. From then on, I would keep being introduced to people throughout campus and make connections with them as well. I followed those connections to the fullest and have made some of the greatest friends I could ever ask for.
What advice do you have for students who are just starting their college search process?
Remind yourself, this will be your home for the next four years. This is where you will make life-long friendships, meet people who could give a speech at your wedding, and somewhere you can always be proud of. Follow your heart. And when asked about where you went to college, be proud of your answer like there’s not a doubt in your mind.
What do you plan to do with your theatre degree after your spring 2027 graduation?
I plan on moving back to Jacksonville to work with some theatre companies and save up financially so that eventually, I can move to New York and follow my dreams. After that, I hope to teach one day, in honor of my mom who was an English teacher while I was growing up.

Team members and coaches should return to the museum during the second quarter when three minutes remain on the game clock to prepare for the halftime presentation.
Family members and guests are welcome to join the team in the museum but must purchase a Section A ticket through GoFan.
The stadium’s clear bag policy will be enforced, and all guests must pass through the Evolv Weapons Detection System before entering Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to allow additional time for security screening.

One month into the job, Valdosta State University's new president says his vision for the institution is starting to take shape.
Dr. Donald Green became VSU's 11th president on August 1st, after previously serving as president of Gordon State College in Barnesville, Georgia. There, his administration increased both retention and graduation rates. Now he's bringing that same focus to student success at VSU.
"One of the things that we're implementing now at VSU is a graduation message. From day one, when you show up here, you're here to graduate. You are here to complete, and we're going to do everything in that value proposition to help students to be able to complete and have an amazing life," Green said.
Green says his connection to VSU goes back years.
"10 years ago, I stepped on Valdosta State University's campus was when I was at Georgia Highlands, and I was immediately taken with the institution…and at that time, I said to myself, if there is ever an opportunity, I'd love to be the president at VSU," Green said.
Getting students to graduation is only part of the goal. Green wants more students connected with local employers before they leave campus — through internships, research and other workforce opportunities.
"Local employer relationships mean that we have graduates who are already tied into the local community, and by doing so, they stay. Because we need our talent to stay in South Georgia," Green said.
Within his first month, Green says he has already visited 9 high schools, South Georgia Medical Center, and Wiregrass Technical College to begin building those connections. He is also setting a benchmark for where he wants the university to be a year from now.
"In one year there would probably be four new degree programs that are truly unique, that change the brand of what Valdosta State University is. You're going to see far more students who are employed in internships or research opportunities with the community," Green said.
When I talked to students, they shared a variety of things they'd like to see from their new president.
"I want to see the president being more interactive with students on campus on a daily basis, like just saying hi, be a part of our videos that they record in the student union," Caldreonna Berrian, a VSU student, said.
"I want to see like new campus improvements, like build a new stadium, you know cause we have a very good campus; we have great activities going on, we got people walking around, everything is fun, but a new stadium would bring more to the Valdosta side," Trinton Bryant, a VSU student, said.
Green says VSU's academic offerings need to evolve with the workforce. He is looking at areas including engineering technology, biosciences, data science, robotics and drones.

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University’s Alyssa Vallad and Dr. Michelle MacLellan spent the summer investigating a plant disease that could have significant implications for South Georgia’s tomato and pepper producers.
Their research project — “Exploring a Potential Host Range Shift of Xanthomonas campestris pv. raphani in Commercial Tomato and Pepper Production in South Georgia” — focused on tracking changes in populations of the bacterial spot pathogen Xanthomonas in commercial greenhouses and production fields.
It was one of six projects selected for the VSU Mary Virginia Terry Center for Experiential Learning’s 2026 Blazer Summer Research Institute, a highly competitive program that provides undergraduate students the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors on real-world, potentially life-impacting, research projects. This year’s BSRI kicked off June 9 and continued through July 31.
As part of their research, Vallad and MacLellan worked to develop pathogen identity profiles that can be used to identify the harmful bacteria before infected seedlings are transplanted into fields, where outbreaks can lead to widespread crop losses.
“This topic was something Dr. MacLellan was working on previously at the University of Georgia, and I was interested in helping her complete her work while also learning about plant pathology and gaining experience in lab work,” said Vallad, a senior biology major from Riverview, Florida, who anticipates graduating in May 2027.
“I have enjoyed how this project gives a little more purpose to my schoolwork. Participating in research helps me put more reason behind what I am learning in my classes. It has really enhanced my academic experience.”
Vallad said that she has been inspired by MacLellan’s passion for the work and credited the assistant professor of biology with helping to shape her growth as both a student and a scientist.
“Dr. MacLellan has been a great help in cultivating my curiosity and guiding me to the next steps in my education,” she shared.
“This is my first year at VSU and my first time participating in BSRI, and I have really enjoyed the opportunity to work closely with Alyssa throughout the summer and share my passion for research with her,” MacLellan said. “The dedicated research time has allowed us to work together through the different stages of a real research project and build a strong mentor-student relationship. It has also been a great opportunity for me to start building my undergraduate research program at VSU and create meaningful research experiences for students.”
Vallad and MacLellan recently discussed their BSRI project during VSU’s Summer Showcase: Research, Innovation, and Impact event. They also traveled to Rhode Island to present their research at the 2026 American Phytopathological Society Plant Health conference.
“I have seen Alyssa grow tremendously throughout the summer,” MacLellan noted. “She started by learning how to collect and process samples from commercial fields and has progressed to isolating bacteria and using molecular methods to help identify bacterial pathogens. It has been very rewarding to see her laboratory skills develop and watch her become more comfortable with the research process, from asking questions and troubleshooting experiments to interpreting her results.”
Vallad plans to continue working on research with MacLellan throughout the 2026-2027 academic year. When asked if she had advice for prospective student researchers, she said that she would encourage them to get started as early as possible and to get involved in as many projects as possible to gain experience and expand their skillset.
“There’s a learning curve between what you do during in-class labs versus what you do in the research lab,” she said. “It requires a different way of thinking.”
VSU’s Blazer Summer Research Institute is funded by the Division of Academic Affairs and private donors. Student-faculty research is central to the university’s commitment to experiential learning and plays a critical role in the academic setting by fostering deeper understanding through active participation. Students who engage in applied learning experiences demonstrate higher retention rates, improved academic performance, and greater post-graduation success.
